With one of the most popular shows ever created... Breaking Bad now behind us after its 5 season run and Emmy record breaking wins, star Bryan Cranston has been largely in TV but now finds himself returning slowly to the big screen with such roles in Godzilla but with the true story of old school hollywood writer Trumbo due out tomorrow what other memorable characters has he portrayed? Heres my top 3 film roles to date showcasing his best work.
1) Drive - Shannon
One of my favorite films by Nicolas Winding Refn, a director who has a great eye for beautiful lighting was smart to put Cranston in the shoes of a old worn down auto shop owner who still has a young heart for racing and its cars but a bad habit of gambling and a even worse debt to pay off. While his role isn't a large one, his presence does provide enough to appreciate his contribution.
2) Argo - Jack O'Donnell
Ben Affleck's third directorial about C.I.A. operative Tony Mendez leading the rescue of six U.S. diplomats from Tehran, Iran during the 1979–1981 Iran hostage crisis in which Cranston played his boss Jack O'Donnell. The film later went on to win Best Picture for the 2013 Academy Awards.
3) Trumbo - Dalton Trumbo
The underdog that may just win him Best Actor at the Academy Awards or at least certainly a nomination with this powerhouse performance. Hollywood and its suits love a good old school film with a good spirit, especially when its done right and from a true story. The top screen writer in the town only to find his way at the very bottom and blacklisted due to his political beliefs has to once again rise to the top. With zippy dialogue, sleek visuals and a superb all around cast Trumbo is a class act.
