After the shocker season finale that not only killed Master Splinter but also destroyed the Earth TMNT was poised for an epic space adventure and the new season’s opening episode does not disappoint.

A most wretched hive of scum and villainy
A most wretched hive of scum and villainy

Firstly, through time travel Professor Honeycutt offers the turtles and the audience a bit of hope following the previous season's downer ending. this comes in the form of a trip six months into the past. What follows is a madcap adventure in a wretched hive of scum and villainy.

While the plot is entirely new the current arc has already touched on some of the best aspects of Eastman and Laird’s classic Fugitoid arc. Much of the original humor is preserved as the turtles try to blend in on an alien planet and utterly fail.

Essentially the first episode of the season takes many of it’s cues from TMNT #5, particularly a single page.

Classic Turtles in space

This page brings up the question of space money and introduces the idea of the turtles interacting with alien substances and attempting to pick up some strange alien woman. The writers take these basic building blocks present on the page and fully embellish them into an insane spiraling romp though an alien landscape that ultimately ends with the four reptiles making some serious enemies in a very short period. Great way to kick off the season, totally new adventure but remaining fully in the spirit of the source material.
