During an AMA session on Reddit yesterday, Dan Borth of Red Fly Studios revealed that their studio has big plans to pick up and further a previously axed 'big project'. It was at this point the internet went into meltdown.

Why you ask? This 'big project', as it turns out is huge. Mr Borth and Red Fly studios have stated that they are back in the business of building an all new Star Wars game (cue the music - daaa, daaa, da, da, da, daaa...). And not only will they be building a new Star Wars game, but it will be built specifically for the next generation of gaming tech.

The Star

Before we get to the premise of the next game, we need to get to the star. According to Borth, the game will focus on a certain Star Wars character who, let's just say, airs a little more on the dark side.

"Fear. Fear attracts the fearful… the strong… the weak… the innocent… the corrupt. Fear. Fear is my ally.

As a youngster learning the ways of the force, this character took up a secret apprenticeship position within the Mustafar training facility, who along with the help of a split personality droid became a powerful and rage consumed combatant. He mastered the arts of Juyo, Ataru, Jar'Kai, and Teräs Käsi, and now chooses to wield a double ended red-bladed saberstaff.

Yea, I think you may have guessed it by now but this game will focus on the one and only, Darth Maul!

The Next Generation of Star Wars Game

According to Borth the general premise will track the life of Darth Maul. The gameplay will focus on key aspects of his development, in essence playing through the key moments that inevitably make him the character he is in Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

The game plans to take us up to the very beginning of Episode 1. The developers want to formulate and follow a certain theory - the devs, who are big Star Wars fans themselves, believe that all Jedis are just Siths who aren’t as forthcoming about their goals.

Although the game was axed a couple of years back, Borth and his team believe that now is the time - the consumer hype is right and the game design is a smash.

However he also stated that the final decision would ultimately lie with the big publishers like EA and they would need to provide their powers that be with a concept that won't fail to blow them away.

“We are currently working on a full next gen demo of all things Maul to show to the powers that be. It’s been a lot of work on our off time. . . . We have been burning a candle for this game since it was killed in hopes we can get it turned back on again. IF that is to happen we need to approach EA with a demo that will impress them. I think we have that or are close to it. Still it is completely not up to us.”

At this stage, the team have little in examples to release to the media, however it sounds like Red Fly studios have potentially nailed down something very special.

Combat Aesthetics

In terms of combat and game aesthetics, we will be aiming for a gaming experience similar to that of Dice's Battlefront crossed with RockSteady's Batman series.

The game will mostly likely be third person, over the shoulder layout with a controller set up similar to Batman or Mad Max. The player will earn his abilities as they go, they will become stronger and more powerful as they learn to harbour the true power of the force. Special abilities and power upgrades will be the obvious way to go with this title.

This game will not be available on last gen machines and will potentially come with VR compatibility.

In My Opinion

As far as casting goes for a new game, I think that Darth Maul is one of the strongest contenders. He has a rich and varied history that will be fun to explore.

As for a protagonist that pledges his allegiance to the dark side - well, I think that is just ace, anyone with a title of Dark Lord gets my vote. I am finally glad to be able to get lost amongst the power of the imperial without feeling a little guilty for abandoning my troubled people.

Let's be honest, the majority of the Star Wars media is now likely to focus on episodes IV-VII, which is great, but a game that focuses on a lesser known bad guy certainly has legs in my book.

Darth Maul is actually one of the more powerful bad guys in the franchise and Red Fly studios could have masses of fun building upon that premise. I mean come on, this guy took on two Jedi masters at once and came out on top - almost.

I am getting more and more excited to see what this guy can really do. Red Fly studios you have my blessing, EA need to move over to the dark side immediately.
