2015 is the year of Star Wars! The biggest franchise in nerd history is back in the spotlight in several different ways. There's Star Wars Rebels, the awesome show currently airing on Disney XD; the upcoming revival of the Star Wars: Battlefront game franchise; and of course, the long-awaited Star Wars: The Force Awakens film coming out in December!
But with all this recent Star Wars love, there's one question I've got to ask: Where's the prequel appreciation?
Alright, put down your pitchforks, I'm not even sure why you would own a pitchfork in the 21st century...
I'm not a huge fan of the prequels, I don't think they're as bad as some like to exaggerate, but they aren't very good. Still, with Star Wars getting all of this much deserved attention, it wouldn't be right to leave the prequels out, would it?
Luckily, one Star Wars project is going to bring back the absolute best thing about the prequels: Everyone's favorite Dathmorinian Sith, Darth Maul!
Of all the mistakes the prequels made, killing off this awesome Sith Master was their biggest one. How dare you give Jar Jar Binks a longer lifespan than this guy!
Darth Maul was everyone's favorite part of the prequels (besides Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan!), which is why it's very peculiar that there isn't a ton of Star Wars content starring him. He was, of course, the main antagonist of the first prequel film (The Phantom Menace), and he's had a few comic storylines, but nothing to really give him the credit he so deserves.
Fortunately, a game centering around Darth Maul, Battle of the Sith Lords, began development in 2010—unfortunately, development halted and the game was canceled a year later. Fortunately again (I apologize for toying with your emotions), the developers are looking to bring the game back to life.
Dan Borth from Red Fly Studio, the folks behind the game, recently created a Reddit AMA on the Gaming Sub-Reddit. Obviously, most of the questions were related to the canceled Darth Maul game.
But why was the game canceled in the first place? Well, it was unfortunately being developed around the same time George Lucas was closing the deal to sell Lucasfilm Ltd. and LucasArts to the Walt Disney Company. After Disney purchased the rights, they shut down LucasArts, terminating the Darth Maul game as well as Star Wars 1313; another highly anticipated Star Wars game starring a young Boba Fett.
For the longest time, it really seemed like the game was dead, despite so many fans wanting it to be revived. Well, thanks to the Reddit AMA, we know that Red Fly Studio is planning to bring the game back, and currently have a prototype ready to show to EA!
But what exactly will the game be about, assuming (and strongly praying) EA agrees to distribute it? A lot of the details are still scarce, but here's what we know so far:
The Game Will Be An Origin Story
According to Dan Borth, the game will show you the very beginnings of Darth Maul and the events that molded him into one of the deadliest Siths of all time:
[The game will show] young Maul age 9 or 11 to right before Episode 1. We wanted to show what he went through to become a Sith. Showcase the torture the Emperor put him through. Show how you as the player would have made the same mistakes and ended up a Sith.
I'm not one who usually likes villain redemption stories. If a villain is straight up evil, there's really no need to make us feel bad for them. Maleficent is an exception, because we didn't know much about the titular character, so she might have had some sympathetic qualities.
Darth Maul seems like a straight up evil character, but like Maleficent, we don't know a lot about him, so there's plenty of plausible sad moments in his life to make us feel bad for him.
Personally, I would love to know more about Darth Maul. The character's past is shrouded in mystery, which means there's plenty of room for this game to deliver some awesome and original storytelling!
It Was Meant For Last-Gen Consoles (But That May Change...)
Battle of the Sith Lords was being made for the PC and Wii U, as well as the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 entertainment systems. While the Wii U and PC versions may still come out, should the game be released, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 might not see the light of day...
We've reached the age of the next-gen consoles. Sure, the PS3 and 360 still have games coming out for them, and probably will for years—but the differences between the last-gen and the current-gen are more apparent than ever.
For example, Mortal Kombat X was supposed to come out for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One first, and then the PS3 and 360 later. the PS4 and XBOne versions released, but due to graphical limitations, the PS3 and 360 versions were canceled. I'm hoping the game comes out for those who have yet to make the transition to the current-gen, but that likely won't be the case.
The Game Will Be Like The Arkham Series (And Possibly Feature Multiplayer)
Battle of the Sith Lords has gameplay similar to that of the Arkham series of games, with an emphasis on stealth and action. When you think about it, a lot of games have taken notes from the Arkham series, which itself took a few notes from the Assassin's Creed series.
The game might have also had a multiplayer component. The initial plot for the game was that Darth Maul and Darth Talon would team up and wage a war against Darth Krayt and his Sith army for breaking the Sith 'Rule of Two.' The 'Rule of Two' basically states that there can be only two active Sith at a time.
It was never specifically stated if the game would have a multiplayer component, and it's entirely possible for the game to feature two protagonists and still be only single player. A multiplayer mode would be incredibly fun, though! Just imagine teaming up with a friend to take down an entire army of Siths... AS Siths!
The Game Might Not Be A Darth Maul Game...?
So as it turns out, Battle of the Sith Lords may not be the same game it was when it was being worked on five years ago. I mean, obviously the game is going to go through some changes, and it was hardly past its early stages to begin with, but what I mean is that it may not even be a Darth Maul game anymore at all.
Dan Borth revealed that while they are working on their own stage demo to present to EA, they are willing to re-skin the game to meet EA's (and Disney's) vision of Star Wars.
This presumably means that if EA wanted to get rid of Darth Maul and have the focus of the game be on any of the newer Star Wars characters, Red Fly Studio might be willing to do that. I'm really, really hoping that the game sticks to the Darth Maul origin story, but I'm totally not against a game starring, say, Kylo Ren. Who wouldn't want to swing that awesome hilted lightsaber around?
And let's say the game has customization options. Just imagine the upgrades you could give that sweet saber.
So that's all we really know about the (possibly) upcoming Darth Maul game! If you think the game sounds cool, make sure to support it as much as you can.
Let's hope EA hears our cries and makes the epic Darth Maul game we've wanted for so long. Then, you know, get started on Star Wars 1313, because I really want that, too...
