If you tend to turn to the rich, famous and fabulous for Halloween inspiration, then beware. Not all of them apply the required set of tact, intelligence nor decency when it comes to getting into character for the festive season. When your chosen costume is undoubtably and immediately going to be splashed across the world, a little bit of tasteful forethought goes a long, long way.
Here's what NOT to wear this Halloween:
1. Ashley Benson as Cecil the Lion
This costume caused so much offense, Ashley Benson had to post a public apology on Instagram. Blaming her management for a mistake in the title, she offered to donate a load of cash to the World Wildlife Fund as recompense.
2. Heidi Klum as Godess Kali
Heidi Klum is renowned for owning Halloween with her extravagant costumes. In 2008, however, she went as the Goddess Kali and created quite the uproar. Accused of "using the religion for decoration or to advance [her] selfish agenda," Hindu-American leaders demanded an apology.
3. Colton Haynes as Kanye West
As if black-facing as Kanye wasn't enough for Arrow's Colton Haynes, he did it again as Gandhi just one year later. Super tasteful!
4. Julianne Hough as Crazy Eyes
Another celeb whose mind took a leave of absence one Halloween was Julianne Hough when she 'blacked-up' as Crazy Eyes from Orange Is the New Black. Later offering this apology:
I am a huge fan of the show Orange is the New black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize.
5. Khloé Kardashian & Scott Disick as 'Sheik Pussy'
Khloé Kardashian & (Kourtney's now ex-boyfriend) Scott Disick really showed their intelligent and sensitive side when Disick dressed as an Arab Sheik and Khloé Instagram'd it with the caption 'Sheik Pussy.'
An episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians documented her posting the image and followed as the reactions poured in. Khloé, apparently, had no idea the costume was culturally inappropriate.
“I just wrote “Sheik Pussy.” Wait, what’s wrong with it? I don’t understand. Nothing is nice so far, what is happening?!”
6. Chris Brown as a Taliban Member
Not exactly known for his charm, Chris Brown dressed as a member of the Taliban one year, with his friend offering this "reasoning" to Hollywood Life:
“It’s Halloween and people can be whoever the f**k they want to be. That’s the whole point. It’s a costume. We all didn’t mean no disrespect by dressing up as Arabs. Nobody ain’t mention s**t about no Taliban or nothing like that. We just went out, put on a costume and had some fun. Damn, it’s too early in the day to be talking about drama and s**t like that. It’s f**king Halloween and all that really matters is that he had a good time and came out and supported Rihanna and made a big a** donation to her charity. Talk about that instead of a stupid costume.”
7. Snooki as a Missing Person Advert
In the '80s, people used to advertise their missing person on the side of a milk carton in the hope that the widespread coverage would aid their discovery... so naturally the country delivered a collective sigh when Jersey Shore‘s Snooki used this as outfit inspo.
8. Lily Allen as Dr. Luke
In 2014 Lily Allen opted to dress as Dr. Luke for her Halloween costume. For those of you unfamiliar with the name, Dr. Luke was the music producer Kesha was suing at the time, as she claimed he had drugged her and both sexually and verbally abused her throughout her career. Tasteful.
9. Paris Hilton as Sexy Indian
Otherwise known as, 'Paris Hilton Goes as Insensitive Racist for Halloween.' Eesh.
10. Adrianne Curry as Amy Winehouse
America's Next Top Model winner Adrianne Curry isn't exactly known for her sensitivity, but mocking and belittling Amy Winehouse's drug addiction is a pretty shitty move.
You might want to check this list for celebrity based inspiration instead. But if not, be sure to have your apologies at the ready!
