After the moderate success of The Visit, director M. Night Shyamalan has a title and release date for his next thriller.
It seems as though studios have regained trust in Shyamalan after a series of unsuccessful films including After Earth and The Last Airbender. Shyamalan's The Visit was released to moderate success, grossing about $90 million dollars at the box office, on a small budget of just five million dollars.
Studios are now willing to give M. Night a small budget to make other thrillers and continue his resurgence, that started with his work in the hit series Wayward Pines.
Blumhouse Productions, responsible for franchises like Paranormal Activity and Insidious have reached an agreement with Shyamalan to release a thriller titled Split to be released on January 20th 2017.
The film's cast will include Anya Taylor Joy, Haley Lu Richardson, Betty Buckly, and Jessica Sula, but the star of Split will be none other than Professor Xavier himself James McAvoy.
Not much is known about the film's plot but I feel confident in saying it'll be a thrill ride. The combination of Shyamalan's twists and turns and McAvoy's excellent on-screen presence will make for a thriller unlike any other.
I'd consider Shyamalan's career revived on the basis of Wayward Pines' success alone. It was received positively by critics and gained millions of viewers consistently. Now that The Visit's numbers have come in positively as well, fans should be willing to give M. Night another chance. I'm sure he won't let us down now.
