Fans have been campaigning for Ronda Rousey to take on the role of Marvel's next great female superhero Captain Marvel. Rousey herself has even expressed interest in taking on the role so it seemed like a match made in Heaven right? There is just one issue, another actress is expressing great interest in the role, this could definitely mean competition for the UFC champ!
Olivia Wilde wants to play Captain Marvel!
Director Reed Morano took to Twitter to answer questions and revealed that she had great interest in directing Captain Marvel along with Olivia Wilde as the titular character. When asked by a fan if she would be interested in helming the 2019 superhero epic alongside Wilde, Morano responded with this:
"Oh hell yea. Let's DO this! I'm starting my @Marvel diet immediately. Eggshells and jet fuel only, right? Who says indie kids can't go pro?!"
So, Morano has just thrown both her and Wilde's name into the long list of interested actresses and directors that Marvel is considering. During an interview with Cinema Blend, Wilde and Morano elaborated on the above mentioned Twitter conversation with fans.
"I’m a big fan of superhero films, and I have so much respect for the Marvel Cinematic Universe," said Wilde. "The thing with female superheroes is that, in order to be powerful, they are flawless. The idea of kick-ass power lacks a certain nuance, at times. There is something to be said for a female director working to create a female superhero that perhaps [has] a little more complexity."
Not only did Wilde express her interest in the role, but also complimented Marvel on their use of female heroes so far, something that has been a controversial topic. Wilde definitely knows what it takes to make a good female superhero, but also went on to remind us that Marvel has done great at casting unknowns for roles for ages now.
"Marvel has been so smart about casting unexpected people for these roles," she admitted. "Look at what Robert Downey brought to Iron Man. A real, dry sense of humor and a complexity to his hero balance. I think that the way these Marvel heroes are written, the female superheroes included, do have complexity and flaws. But I think when they are translated into film, the women can become these ultimate goddesses of perfection and I would love to create a female Marvel character who is just as unexpected and complex as some of the male characters as Iron Man. I think that would be really cool!"
This is definitely the truth, Marvel has cast some people that nobody expected and done extremely well with them. Did anyone think that Samuel L. Jackson would work as Nick Fury? While Wilde does have a point, could the TRON: Legacy actress don well in the role?
Would Olivia Wilde do well as Captain Marvel?
Olivia Wilde is definitely someone that doesn't come to mind when I think of Captain Marvel and that is why I think she could do well. As she stated, Marvel has been immensely successful in casting actors and actresses that nobody quite expected and done extremely well both for and by them. Olivia Wilde is an outstanding actress and I think her personality is perfect for that of Captain Marvel. A strong, sexy, and extremely intelligent actress is exactly what Marvel should be looking for. It is still a toss up, I'm not too sure who I would pick, Ronda Rousey or Olivia Wilde, you decide!
