Where the heck is Luke Skywalker?

This is the question every fan has been asking since the first trailer for Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens release. The mystery deepened when the third and final trailer for the film released and the last Jedi was nowhere to be seen. Added to the fog of mystery has been the fact that Luke Skywalker has been a major part of the marketing not only for the upcoming game [Star Wars: Battlefront](tag:2684021), but also for the newly released comic books and merchandise tie in for The Force Awakens.

So again it begs the question: Where is he?

We know his role in The Force Awakens is a substantial one, as Mark Hamill reported being assigned a personal trailer to get into shape for the film, he also said he was required to grow a beard. If his role was nothing but a glorified cameo at the conclusion of the film Hamill would not have needed a personal trainer, no one would of cared if he was out of shape or not. The only reason he would need a trainer is if he was being required to be active and participating in combat scenes. Some have even said he has been in the new trailer and poster but is hidden or masked.

He was there the whole time!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams recently attended the red carpet for the GLSEN Respect Awards, he was asked about Luke Skywalker's absence from the trailers and poster. He replied:

“These are good questions to be asking. I can’t wait for you to find out the answer… It’s no accident.”
If you look closely you will see Luke is behind me

The above quote seems to indicate that Luke’s absence from the film marketing and his role must be very shocking and exciting. If he was being held back for a cameo there would be nothing to stop him from being in a tiny shot of the trailer or poster.
