Gravity Falls season 2 has been a rollercoaster ride in the last few episodes, as Weirdmageddon kicks off. This is officially Bill Cipher's party town now, and things are only going to get stranger in future episodes. Dipper has a massive mission ahead of him: saving Mabel and defeating Bill will definitely take some doing, and it's impossible to predict what will happen next!
Alex Hirsch recently confirmed that this is only the start of a multi-episode arc, but how long will this plot continue for? Could the Pines twins be stuck in Gravity Falls forever? And did you catch these hidden hints in Gravity Falls S02E18?
Gravity Falls has been building towards the end of the world as we know it since the show began, but few fans suspected it would get quite this weird. Throwing all logic out the window, S02E18 presents a wild, bizarre, post-apocalyptic landscape, where Gideon commands a gang of truckers and Wendy Corduroy is finally free to re-enact [Mad Max: Fury Road](tag:41445).
Bill's tear through the dimensions is sure to have huge consequences, but can Dipper and Mabel (and Wendy and Soos) stop the triangle trickster before it's too late? It's entirely possible that they won't, as Alex Hirsch has hinted that the consequences of the Weirdmageddon episodes will determine the future of the entire show.
While being interviewed on this podcast, Hirsch was asked whether season 2 would end the show, and if not, how the story could possibly continue when the summer ends.
"Is this the end or the beginning? What could happen next? Right now unfortunately I cannot comment on those questions."
The fact that he can't comment could mean a number of different things (mostly that Disney still wants to keep the future of Gravity Falls under wraps). But it's likely that the next few episodes will answer these questions, and we could see something totally wild happen, like the kids being transported to an alternate dimension! Or a time travel hiccup causing them to repeat the summer, or the whole of season 3 focusing on the ancient aliens' return... When it comes to Gravity Falls, anything is possible.
But until we find out whether Gravity Falls will continue, it looks like we can expect a lot more weirdness before the end of season 2.
"This is one giant, epic, multi-part story. The stakes are going to be higher, the situations are going to be stranger, the magic is going to be bigger, and we will see every character again in some fashion having to deal with this completely unusual situation. You’ve never seen anything like this before."
We might not be able to predict how this tale will end, but there are plenty more clues for us to dissect before S02E19 airs. So grab those journals, it's time to crack out a few new theories!
Codes, Hints, And Clues
As always, Weirdmageddon featured a plethora of Easter eggs for fans to devour. And here are the main hints you need to know!
First off: Time Baby and the REAL end of the world. That's right, the Oddpocalypse isn't actually how our world dies, and how do we know that? Because Dipper already discovered the date of the real end of the world! This will occur in roughly 1000 years time, as revealed in the Gravity Falls short The Mailbox...
The mailbox seems to be all-knowing, so obviously Dipper and Soos bombard it with a bunch of important questions (like "what did I shave into my head this morning?"). Naturally, Dipper wants to know when the real apocalypse will occur and this is the answer...
"3012? Huh. We've got a while!"
What does this have to do with Weirdmageddon? Well, this what was the code at the end of S02E18 said...
"IT WILL TAKE 1,000 YEARS FOR TIME BABY’S MOLECULES TO RECONSTITUTE. AND WHEN HE’S BACK, HE’S GOING TO BE VERY CRANKY."
So Bill does succeed in ending the world, indirectly at least. By destroying Time Baby he may have created an infinite loop wherein the dictator's tyrannical rule begins when his molecules reconstitute in 3012. Of course, this doesn't tell us much about how the kids defeat Bill (and it doesn't even confirm that they will, as all rules of time and space seem to have flown out the window at this point). But it's still a fun little prediction!
Oh and it looks like all those theories about one of the Pines dying might be about to come true...
