The new Big Bad of the Star Wars franchise is a new guy: Kylo Ren. Not much is known about the masked villain, but rumors as to his identity have ranged from Darth Revan to Luke Skywalker. While a brand new character, or even a Skywalker child would make sense, I want to go another route. Before I begin, let's talk about what we do know.
What we know
First off, he's not a Sith. J.J. Abrams, the director of the film had this to say when asked about the character.
“Kylo Ren is not a Sith. He works under Supreme Leader Snoke, who is a powerful figure on the Dark Side of the Force.”
So, Andy Serkis (Snoke) is a Sith...it seems the Ring corrupted him a little too much. But that's not the point. The point is that Ren isn't a Sith. Rather, he's a Force-sensitive being with a lightsaber. We also know that Ren is a part of the Knights of Ren. It's a shadowy group made up of Mandalorians and other beings. Ren appears to be the leader of this group.
We also know that Kylo Ren has a need to finish the work that Darth Vader started. Whether that 'work' is bringing balance to the force, or destroying the Jedi is yet to be seen. Whatever the case may be, we don't know a lot. So, with that being said, allow me to jump to some crazy conclusions, based on little fact and much conjecture.
Who is Kylo Ren?
First up, let's take a look at some things that may or may not point towards one particular character. First up, his actions. We often see him chasing the protagonists during the trailers, which is odd. Did Darth Vader personally hunt down our heroes? No. If Kylo Ren is supposed to be the Darth Vader character, then why is he acting like a mercenary? Also, I don't remember Vader have a space-ship that he travels the galaxy in. Sure, he had the TIE Advanced, but that wasn't an intergalactic vehicle.
Second, his lightsaber, and the fact that we've not really seen him use the Force. Personally, I love his broadsword-like blade, but it's shoddy workmanship. The hilt is a hodge-podge of parts and the blade itself is not the crisp beam that your traditional sabers are. And, while we've seen him reach out at the screen, there isn't really any evidence that he's a Sith. J.J. Abrams told us as much.
Finally, let's take a look at Ren's little posse: the Knights of Ren. Now, some have said that he adopted that surname upon his joining the group, but...in the trailer he appears to be the head of this covert team. I'd like to point out three things. First, Kylo is the only member with a lightsaber. Two, it looks as if Rey may be joining them at some point (look at the staff one of the knights is holding). Finally, there's a strong Mandalorian presence on that team. At least two for sure, and possibly more wear armor of Mandalore. Kylo's helmet even resembles the buckets that those mercenaries are known to wear.
What does this add up to? Well, I believe that it's this guy:
Why Boba Fett?
Now, before you run out to make a meme about this, just listen. First up, Boba Fett is supposed to have survived the Sarlaac. It's plausible that even though the books are no longer canon, that he could escape. In the events after Episode VI, Boba escapes the Sarlaac, and wanders the galaxy, memory lost. He's found by the First Order and taken in by Snoke. He's taught the ways of the Dark Side, and given the tools to build a lightsaber (much like Luke was in A New Hope). Fett takes on the name of Kylo Ren, and begins his hunt anew.
Now, let's dispell some questions with this theory. First, age doesn't seem to be a huge issue in this universe. And, while Adam Driver isn't old, he doesn't appear to be too young. Boba Fett was a genetically enhanced clone of one of the greatest fighters in the galaxy: he's got good genes.
Second: he would know what Vader's mission was. Vader wanted to bring Luke to the Dark Side. That plan involved hunting down Luke and his friends. That's what Boba Fett was taxed with in the first place. Finally, some have claimed that one of the Knights of Ren is Boba Fett. While I agree that it's possible, his famous armor isn't unique to him, and it's too dark to tell what color it is.
In conclusion, this is all theory and conjecture. I'm making these assumptions on short bursts of highly edited footage. In all honesty, I think that Kylo Ren will be a new character, and possibly a Skywalker. That being said, it could work for Boba Fett to be Kylo Ren, and I think would make an interesting sub-plot that could be explored in an anthology film. But now it's time to let you tell me what you think! Be sure to let me know your thoughts in the comments!
