Welcome to Casting Call, where we pick our favorite anime and do some fantasy casting for them! This week: Cowboy Bebop!

Cowboy Bebop was a Japanese anime series that was released in 1997 and ran for 26 episodes and one movie; there was a slightly longer running manga series of the same name that ran from 1998-2000. With lots of high octane action, great characters, slick animation, and a perfect mix of action/drama/comedy, Bebop never disappointed! Here’s the series in a nutshell from the Funimation website and a trailer for the show.

“Explore the far reaches of the galaxy in this undeniably hip series that inspired a generation – and redefined anime as an indisputable art form. The Bebop crew is just trying to make a buck. This motley lot of intergalactic loners teams up to track down fugitives and turn them in for cold hard cash. Spike is a hero whose cool façade hides a dark and deadly past. The pilot Jet is a bruiser of a brute who can’t wait to collect the next bounty. Faye Valentine is a femme fatale prone to breaking hearts and separating fools from their money. Along for the ride are the brilliant, but weird, hacker Ed and a super-genius Welsh Corgi named Ein. On their own, any one of them is likely to get lost in the sprawl of space, but together, they’re they most entertaining gang of bounty hunters in the year 2071.”

Now, either you’ve stopped reading this to go watch some episodes or you’re already a fan, either way here we go!

Spike Spiegel / Adrien Brody

The main character and star of the show, Spike is more deadly than he appears and has an endless supply of snark for the fugitives he tracks down. A mix of Spider-Man and The Punisher, Spike is not one to underestimate and Adrien Brody would be the perfect choice for this role. He has the tall lean lankiness needed for Spike’s build and can shoot ’em up when needed. See Brody’s deadly/action side in: Predators, American Heist, and The Thin Red Line.

Jet Black / Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

The resident muscle and hot head of the team, Jet is Spike’s best friend and original partner in “Cowboying”. He’s quick to attack and is almost always there to back up Spike when needed. We figured the role needed a heavy hitter to intimidate fugitives but also someone who could also be a nice guy and softy to his team, who else other than Dwayne Johnson? Johnson has the look and the attitude to pull off this part with ease. See The Rock in action in: Faster, The Fast & Furious Franchise, G.I. Joe Retaliation, Hercules, The Rundown, Doom, and The Scorpion King.

Faye Valentine / Summer Glau

Sexy, deadly, and a smart-ass, Faye is a dangerous and often underestimated member of the team. She cares for her team but will get the job done and hates being bailed out of trouble. The obvious choice for us was Summer Glau. Not only is Glau sexy but she can play a deadly smart-ass, check all three boxes there. See Summer in action in: Firefly/Serenity, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and The Cape.

Edward Wong / Joey King

Yes, Edward is a girl. Long story. Ed is the hyper-active hacker who helps the team whether they need it or not. Along with her genius Welsh Corgi Ein, they keep the team together. We instantly pictured only one actress able to bring the role to life, Joey King. King can play the manic kid but still pull it together when needed. See King in: Ramona & Beezus, White House Down, Crazy Stupid Love, and The Conjuring.

There you have it! The main cast of the series to a T. We’d definitely pay to a movie starring these actors as these characters! What do you think? Who would you cast?
