This time last year, Red Barrels announced that they were working on the second installment in their Outlast series. Outlast hit it off with audiences worldwide due to its unique horror cam first-person perspective of horror.
With Halloween just around the corner, it seems like the perfect time to set the ball rolling on the next terrifying addition to the Outlast series. The witching hour approaches, lock the doors, board up the windows -- for on Halloween , evil comes a'knocking!
Outlast centers around a story driven survival campaign told in first-person narrative. The first game was set in a dilapidated psychiatric hospital overrun by homicidal patients. Like the first, the gameplay in the sequel will be presented in a similar vein to the found footage genre popularized in horror films.
The teaser, just like the game, is shot in first-person. It opens on a wooden surface engulfed in flames -- as the camera pans back a little more, we see it's a cross. The camera continues to pull back -- but something isn't quite right.
The camera rolls back still further to reveal that the cross is actually positioned upside down in the ground -- the symbolic image of the antichrist.
As unnerving as this image is, there is still something else here that is not right. Something even more sinister is lurking around the cross. In true Outlast fashion, the camera operator flicks the image over to night vision. It is then that the true horror is revealed. Take a look.
According to the Outlast devs, the second installment will be a twisted new journey into the depths of the human mind and its darkest secrets.
“No conflict is ever black and white. But once the dust has settled, the victors get to decide who was right and who was wrong. Who is good and who is evil. Human nature pushes us to extremes of violence and depravity, which we then justify by divine inspiration and a promise of paradise to come. Horror rises from desperation and blind faith. OUTLAST 2 will test your faith, pushing players to a place where going mad is the only sane thing to do.” - Philippe Morin, co-founder of Red Barrels, press release.
Outlast 2 will be an entirely new game, complete with new characters, new locations and an all new entity that you will not want to come across -- but let's be real, you're gonna!
The Outlast signature features, like the night vision camera, will also be making a comeback in the new game.
Was It Really That Scary?
Just in case you forgot how scary Outlast was -- here is a video of real people playing Outlast for the first time. It never fails to entertain. Did you make it through Outlast?
The original game almost had me beat many times, but despite how scary it is, the storyline kept me hooked. I wanted to quit pretty much throughout but just couldn't, now that's a sign of a great horror. A real scare-fest that will have you playing from behind the sofa.
