The success of a movie can't be predicted in Hollywood. Some are very bad but still make a lot (ahem ahem Transformers) and some are really great but still can't manage decent box office collections (ahem ahem Steve Jobs). Let's take a look at some movies that crashed at the box office this year.
Tomorrowland earned a global gross of $208.4 million against a production budget of $190 million. Directed by Brad Bird, this movie was the reason why Disney lost an estimated $120 million - $150 million. Did you see Tomorrowland? Well, personally I liked the movie, and I still can't get over the loss it suffered.
2. Fantastic Four
I guess anybody could guess that this movie was gonna land here. I mean, if the female lead of the film, Kate Mara, says that she is yet to see the film, you kinda get the picture. This movie earned around $146.7 million globally against a budget of $80 million - $100 million. Although such a critically and commercially panned film should leave not even slight chances of a sequel, rumor has it a sequel is going to come out next year. *face palm*
Adam Sandler is on a spree right now - a box office failure spree. This movie looked promising earlier, but well, it turned out to be something else entirely. With a budget of $88+ million this movie managed to make $186.4 million globally. It is estimated the movie made Sony lose around $75+ million. Good going Sandler.
4. The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
Honestly, I didn't think that this movie would turn out to be a box office failure. The Sherlock series director, Guy Ritchie, made this film on a budget of $75+ million and made around $72.1 million worldwide. It's estimated loss is $80+ million. Although, the competition can be blamed for the loss, movies like San Andreas and Mad Max really RULED the box office at that time.
To put it right there, this movie is definitely not among the better movies of the year. I guess the producers were like "We have Cooper and Stone and a bad script, what would go wrong?". Well a lot of stuff went wrong. With budget of $37+ million the movie managed to globally collect $26.2 million. The estimated loss suffered by it is around $65 million. But its okay, after delivering brilliant performances in nearly all their movies, Emma and Bradley should continue doing what they do best. We will try to ignore this one!
Pan got panned by the critics and audiences alike. It also crashed in the box office very bad. Made with a budget of $150 million, the movie only managed to get $93.8 million worldwide. The movie stars Wolver...ah...Hugh Jackman and Garret Hedlund.
7. Jupiter Ascending
Directed by the makers of The Matrix Trilogy, starring Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis in lead roles, the movie had all the elements needed for a box office success. But well if that would have been true, it wouldn't have been on this list, right? Made with a budget of $179 million, the movie managed to earn $183.9 million worldwide. It's estimated loss is around $87 million.
Some of these movies were expected to fail but some of them shocked the audience and the box office alike. Let's just hope that the Box office god remains pleased for rest of the year!
