By now most of ALIEN fandom knows that Neill Blomkamp’s ALIEN film is on hold, pending the release of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus sequel, ALIEN : Paradise Lost.
This news was a shot across the bow to the community, and for many, ruining any hopes of a proper revival of an ALIEN film. Despite the commercial success of Prometheus, it wasn’t a success in large pockets of the fan community. Everything from poor acting, to gaping potholes and ridiculous writing, Prometheus robbed the ALIEN universe of the brand set up by the first two films.
Neill Blomkamp, for many, was the last hope. In spite of his most recent film Chappie's (2014) lack of commercial success, there was a unified faith in him and his vision for the ALIEN franchise. He’s a part of the generation who grew up with ALIENS as a seminole film that would shape his creative endeavors. There’s been widespread belief that his vision would eloquently reset the franchise back to its proper roots.
If 20th Century Fox is concerned about what the fans want, they would quickly turn this around. Sigourney Weaver (Ripley) and Michael Biehn (Hicks) are not getting any younger. Now is the time to get this project off the ground and in theaters in a timely manner.
Writing as an abashed fan of ALIEN films, and a co-host of the only ALIEN specific podcast (Perfect Organism: The Alien Saga Podcast ) the news gutted me the moment I read it. As it stands, I’m no fan of Shaw, the protagonist from Prometheus. The best characters from the film were David and Vickers. Neill Blomkamp made reference to the ALIEN series being as much about Ripley as they are about the creature. I am of the same opinion.
My excitement level for ALIEN : Paradise Lost is now miniscule. The only hope that we have at the moment, is if the creator of this video from YouTube is on to something. It’s our only hope.
