2016 will bring many sequels and new releases to the silver screen, but rest assured, there will be no shortage of spy-thrillers and good old action movies for those who enjoy them. Criminal is an up and coming action-thriller that is sure to turn heads with its stellar ensemble cast that consists of veteran actors sharing the screen with familiar younger actors. The film is being directed by Ariel Vromel who has dabbled in the action movie world for some time, but this film could be his biggest project yet and possibly put him further up on the "list of directors to watch out for" if all goes well.
Here's the plot synopsis:
The story of the right man in the wrong body. In a last-ditch effort to stop a diabolical plot, a dead CIA operative’s memories, secrets and skills are implanted into a former death row inmate in hopes that he will complete the operative’s mission.
The plot sounds serviceable enough to illicit interest and the cast is big enough to get people to go see it. The idea of implanting a CIA agent's skills into a dangerous criminal sounds intriguing and could really offer a strong and effective story if the premise isn't wasted. The real question is what mission was the operative trying to complete? Why did the CIA choose to transfer the memories into the mind of a criminal? What happens after the mission is completed? The plot could go in any number of directions, but ultimately this film will have to try and differentiate itself from other similar films in order to become a modest hit.
Criminal sounds like it could be a surprise hit if it plays all the right notes and plays to its actors strengths while allowing them to try something different. The movie itself hasn't been getting alot of attention, and it's not clear when a trailer will be released so that potential viewers can begin to decide if they'll pay to see it in theaters. Criminal could do well at the box office since it has three veteran actors in the form of Gary Oldman, Tommy lee. Jones, and Kevin Costner, all of whom are well known and well liked. For now, the only thing you can do is wait for a trailer or more set photos to hit the web. Hopefully the film gets noticed among all of the other big budget releases.
