Speculation about [Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens](tag:711158) has been rampant, and this has only been fueled by the latest trailer and merchandise released by Disney. One of the most examined characters is Rey, who already looks set to take up Luke Skywalker's role as the main protagonist of Star Wars 7. She's enigmatic, claiming to be "no-one" in the latest trailer, but we've had some crucial clues recently that might just reveal her role as the next Jedi prodigy!
Force Sensitive Rey
Quite a few people have theorised that at the very least, Rey is Force Sensitive. Thanks to J.J. Abrams officially swearing off Midichlorians, the notion of embracing the Force is far more open, meaning pretty much any character could be Force Sensitive. And we already know that one of the main characters will have a very strong latent ability, as Luke Skywalker revealed in the second trailer...
"The Force is strong in my family. My father had it. I have it. My sister has it. You have that power too."
This clearly implies that Luke is speaking to a relative... But we'll get back to that later. In any case, one of the new characters seems to have a lot of Force power. As we already saw Finn wielding a lightsaber, it seemed likely that he was the Jedi-in-waiting. But now it looks like Rey was a stronger contender for Force Sensitivity than we thought: check out the little girl dressed as Rey in this new Duracell advert...
This is a super cute commercial, and while it might just be tapping into the fun of Force Awakens, it's possible there are some hidden hints crucial to the plot of Star Wars 7. And if not hey, we're gonna take everything as a clue anyway, because speculation is half the fun of waiting for the movie's release!
Little Rey clearly uses a Force push when fighting off the invading Stormtroopers, before teaming up with her brother to defend their house (aw!). Are Disney giving us a hint that Rey is Force Sensitive? It's not as unlikely as you might think: the mysterious scavenger is definitely going to be a major player in the Star Wars 7 plot, and if we didn't follow a character learning to use the Force then it wouldn't really be Star Wars, would it?
But this isn't the only hint we've had that Rey might be in training to become a Jedi...
Rey's Jedi Alignment Revealed?
Thanks to Disney being marketing geniuses, we've been getting a steady stream of clues via new merchandise for a while now. And if they're accurate, these new trading cards might just have revealed Rey's secret identity!
Yup, that's the Jedi symbol on Rey's card! Many fans are taking this as a spoiler that she is already a Jedi, or will be trained by Luke to become one. And when we combine this with the Force Push demonstrated in the Duracell commercial, then the pieces really seem to be falling into place!
Of course, the trading cards don't seem to be totally accurate. After all, they have Kylo Ren marked as a Sith though J.J. Abrams definitively said Ren isn't a Sith, but rather one of the Knights Of Ren. But with Kylo Ren's obvious obsession with Darth Vader, he definitely has a Sith connection.
It's also pretty impossible for Rey to be a Jedi, as in trailer 3 she asks Han about the Jedi and the war...
Rey: "There are stories about what happened."
Han: "It's true. All of it. The Dark Side, the Jedi..."
But there are plenty of other possibilities for what this Jedi alignment might mean. It might just mean that she is Force Sensitive, giving her the potential to become a Jedi. And it already looks like Luke Skywalker will take up the mentor role to train Finn or Rey (or both) in Star Wars Episode 8. Plus there's that mysterious conversation Rey has with Kylo Ren, where he asks her this...
"Is it true, you're just a scavenger?"
While we have no context for this dialogue yet, it seems that Ren might have expected Rey to be more than a simple scavenger, perhaps because she has such strong Force potential that he expects her to be a Jedi!
A New Era
This is really just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Rey. Rumoured to be the daughter of Han and Leia, she also seems to have a dark past, as she is reluctant to tell Maz Kanata who she is in the third trailer. Speculation aside, all we know so far is that Rey is going to have a key part to play in Star Wars 7.
On a non-plot hint note, seeing as we haven't had a prominent female Force user in the movies yet (and definitely not one among the main characters), it would be fantastic for Rey to take up this role... and even better if we get to see Leia use her Force abilities too!
With Star Wars 7 featuring more major female characters than any other Star War film, The Force Awakens is already breaking new ground. Having Rey as a strong Force user, in training to become a Jedi or not, would be a welcome addition to the franchise. But I guess we'll just have to wait and see to find out!
