A Story That Holds Up to the 'Assassin's Creed' Standard

The story of Assassin's Creed Syndicate has definitely held up to the standard set by previous Assassin's Creed games. Playing as the Frye twins, Jacob and Evie, Assassin's Creed Syndicate sends players to London at the height of the Industrial Revolution where the Templar Order has taken power. Through a number of key assassinations, as well as finding favor with the street gangs of London, Jacob and Evie will have to vie for control against the power-hungry Templars.

Aaah. The smog-filled streets of London!

Despite maintaining the Assassin's Creed vs. Templar Order storyline that is associated with every Assassin's Creed game, Assassin's Creed Syndicate manages to build upon the story of the series quite nicely. Furthermore, the character development of Jacob and Evie shows them in a much more human light compared to their predecessors; full of emotion, quite caring, and sarcastically humorous. Assassin's Creed Syndicate will give you a story and characters that help you delve back into the Assassin's Creed world, one assassination at a time!

Characters That Play How You Want To Play

As a veteran of the Assassin's Creed series, I know what it's like to want to play stealthy at one moment, and then decide to recklessly charge into battle with all the weapons in my arsenal. Luckily for us, Assassin's Creed Syndicate gives us two characters that allow gamers to switch between stealthy and brawler-style gameplay in an instant. Playing as Jacob Frye will allow players to brawl it out with the Templars, using a much more brutal style of fighting to destroy anything in his way. On the other hand, playing as Evie Frye will allow players to sneak around enemies, picking them off one by one.

Not quite stealthy, but just as effective!

The fantastic thing about Assassin's Creed Syndicate is that Jacob and Evie's personality reflect their play style, with Jacob being hard-headed and reckless, and Evie being methodical and intelligent. This allows for a more tailored experience for players, instead of forcing them to play one way. Of course, each play style has benefits that the other doesn't have - but Assassin's Creed Syndicate will allow you to play how you want to play!

Welcome Additions To Gameplay

While Assassin's Creed Syndicate behaves like a normal Assassin's Creed game, it features some cool new additions to the overall gameplay. Being set in London during the Industrial Revolution, Assassin's Creed Syndicate sees the introduction of both trains and horse-drawn carriages. Now, while both of these are primarily used as forms of transport, they can also lead to some pretty intense fights! And trust me, you have never experienced an intense fight until you have fought on top of trains and between carriages.

Of course, being a new Assassin's Creed game, you'll have the opportunity to get your hands on some brand new weapons and tools - using these in assassination missions, gangland battles, or any other situation you find yourself in. From the Cane-Sword and Revolver, to the Rope Launcher and Brass Knuckles, you'll have everything you need to get the job done and make London yours!

Other awesome additions to note include:

  • The introduction of 'Sneak Mode' makes players much harder to notice, allows them to hide around corners much more easily, and gives you the ability to sense where enemies are without using 'Eagle Vision.' It also gives you the opportunity for some cool stealth assassinations!
As you can see, this man "tripped".

  • Quick Time Events (QTEs) make an appearance in the game, but it's not as bad as you think! The QTEs appear at different points in the game in response to story objectives. They don't appear in combat situations, meaning you'll be able to battle those pesky Templar without messing up by hitting the wrong button.
  • By default, subtitles are turned on during cutscenes and gameplay. Although this is only a small feature to note, it's one that I hold close to my heart. Thank you, Ubisoft!

The Cons

Now, as every gamer knows, there's always a couple of cons in even the most fantastic of games. The main con to note in Assassin's Creed Syndicate is the general glitches encountered throughout the game. Whether you are fighting against various enemies, or just traversing the streets of London, you're bound to encounter a few glitches. However, they are not so frequent as to take away from the gameplay experience. In fact, they occasionally add to the experience by creating funny moments to tell your friends about!

Awesome fight scenes - most of the time.

Another con to note is the difficult camera control while on trains. Whenever you are fighting on top of trains, and you spot a shiny chest hidden away in a train carriage, you'll suddenly find yourself fighting for control over the camera as it tends to focus in the direction of your objective, instead of where you want it to focus.

Final Thoughts

These couple of negatives that I found within the game failed to take away from my overall experience of playing the game. Assassin's Creed Syndicate is a fantastic addition to the Assassin's Creed series, and one of my most favorite gameplay experiences to date. If you love the Assassin's Creed games, and adore witty humor, then this is the game for you!
