We're not talking in metaphor about the stellar new preview of his latest film -- a trailer is literally on fire! A trailer on the set of Jack Reacher: Never Go Back burst into flames on Friday, yards from where the Top Gun star was staying between sets.
The blaze was far from 'Mission Impossible' to extinguish, though, and was dealt with by fire crews quickly. No one was injured. The trailer could've been blown into 'Oblivion' but crews tackled the blaze, avoiding 'Collateral' damage.
You can see the full video on TMZ.
The star has been filming through the night (and day) for the second installment of the Reacher series, following on from the 2012 original, which grossed $218 million worldwide. The films are based on a series of books written by Lee Child.
They say there's no smoke without fire, so below are some possible scenarios (that most definitely didn't happen, but we can dream) that may've led to the blaze:
1. This message will self destruct in... Oops, too late!
In true Mission Impossible style, Tom receives a special, top secret message for his latest mission.
Having been around the block a few times now, he underestimates the level of destruction. He's slacking.
The usual method rings out... "This message will self destruct in 5... 4..." but Tom ignores the warning.
"3...2..." What harm can it do?
"1..." BOOM - the trailer goes up in flames.
2. Vengeful alien
Annoyed from the fall out of War of the Worlds, a vengeful alien decides to sabotage Cruise's set by producing an extremely precise lightening strike.
Wary and tired from trying to destroy the human race previously, the alien decides to use only just the right amount for the resulting blaze to be a minor annoyance, rather than Armageddon 2.0.
3. A Top Gun mishap
Excited by the prospect of returning to the screen as Maverick in Top Gun 2, Tom begins to do some multi-tasking in a break from Jack Reacher. As part of his method acting, Tom and the Maverick become so intertwined, it's hard to tell what's real.
Blurring the lines of reality and real life, Cruise organizes a fighter Jet to visit the set, determined to brush up on some of his flying skills prior to filming.
However, at only the last moment does he break character, realizing he doesn't actually know how to fly. But it's too late. Without any wingman to back him up, things inevitably go wrong and the set is up in flames.
