If you are a fan of television shows with controversial subject matter and creepy anti-heroes...we might have just the thing for you. The AMC network has proven to be trailblazers in the world of TV, particularly after their success with The Walking Dead. It seems that they are attempting to catch lightning twice, by adapting another graphic novel series that is aimed squarely at adult audiences, with the upcoming show Preacher.
The original comic series was created by Garth Ennis and drawn by Steve Dillon. It had a 75 issue run, with a firm beginning, middle, and end, whose story fits nicely within the confines of episodic television to tell its story. However, it's Preacher's subject matter that may raise some eyebrows and maybe some picket signs. Preacher follows the story of Jesse Custer, who through a series of events, ends up gaining god-like powers. He then goes on a mission to find the real God, who Custer feels has abandoned humanity. As you can tell, the story is rife with blasphemous ideas and subtext that effectively deconstructs organized religion. Perfect for prime-time viewing, right?!?
Preacher stars Dominic Cooper, who you might recognize as Howard Stark from Captain America: The First Avenger and Agent Carter. This time Cooper will bring to life another comic book character, except Jesse Custer has the chance to become even more iconic. Preacher is produced by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen (yes, that Seth Rogen), who also wrote the pilot episode and Sam Caitlin will handle the showrunning responsibilities. Many eyes are on the project to see how their unique brand of humor, blends with the sardonic and twisted humor that is found in the pages of Preacher.
From a look at the brief trailer, many of the demented characters and scenarios from the comic will make it to the screen. It will be interesting to see the reaction, if any, to the show and if it finds its own audience, much like The Walking Dead has. It certainly has the potential to be something memorable. Check out the trailer.
Preacher is the story of Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper, Agent Carter), a conflicted preacher in a small Texas town who is inhabited by a mysterious entity that allows him to develop a highly unconventional power. Jesse, his ex-girlfriend, Tulip (Ruth Negga, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), and an Irish vampire named Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun, This Is England) embark on a journey to, literally, find God.
Preacher debuts on AMC in 2016.
