(The Following Article is a fan theory and pure speculation. There may be spoilers for the upcoming Star Wars: Episode 7)
It seems like fan theories are running rampant on the internet and with that I figured I would throw my hat into the ring with a Star Wars theory.
I know many people have speculated that Luke Skywalker is in fact a member of the Dark Side, even some claiming that he is the new big bad Kylo Ren himself.
Well that is not the case:
Adam Driver is in fact playing Kylo Ren and that is not up for debate. Plus in case you have not seen Mark Hamill in a while, he has put on a few pounds since Return of the Jedi:
Now by no means is Mr. Hamill overweight, but he could not possibly be the slender man we have been seeing in every image of Kylo Ren up until this point.
Just in Case you don't like reading, here is a summary of my theory for the plot of episode 7:
Luke Skywalker is the leader of both the Knights of Ren and The First Order. He established the Knights of Ren as a means of bringing peace to the Galaxy - as his own take on the Jedi Order.
With the Sith eradicated and balance brought to the Force, Luke seeks to master both sides of the force - Light and Dark - in order to truly be a master the Force.
Along the way Luke is overcome with the power of the Dark Side, and his quest to bring Peace to the Galaxy turns more into a quest for Power. He creates/joins The First Order to take over the Galaxy and keep it under his protection. He believes he is doing the right thing and protecting the Galaxy, but it is the Dark Side clouding his judgement. By this time his SON Kylo Ren also becomes his apprentice
Han and Leia do not agree with Luke's action's and decide to go into hiding with their daughter Rey. They keep her Force abilities and relationship with Luke and Kylo a secret in order to keep her away from them and the danger that would follow.
She will inevitability cross paths with The First Order through Finn and the great controversy of Episode 7 begins.
I believe the film will be about Han, Leia, Rey, and Finn joining the new Resistance to bring down the First Order that will later in the film be revealed to be controlled by Luke Skywalker.
Are you following? I hope so; I will now go into a little more detail on my theory and I hope that you take the time to read and keep an open mind.
Why Luke Founding the Knights of Ren Make sense:
We all know by now that the Knights of Ren are just that, The Knight of Ren. Not the Sith or any other Dark Side cult that we have known in Star Wars history, but why?
Kylo Ren is heard in the trailer saying the words "I will finish what you started," and the camera then shows a burnt Darth Vader mask. If The Knights of Ren were truly trying to follow in the footsteps of Darth Vader, then why wouldn't they just be Sith?
Sith have been around for centuries and almost any Dark Side user has always consider himself a part of the Sith, so why not Kylo Ren and his Knights?
I believe that The Knights of Ren were never intended to be pure Dark Side users, or evil. Instead, I think that they were intended for a good purpose by a powerful force user, and the only powerful Force user that we know of at this point is in fact Luke Skywalker.
The word Knight is always generally used to as a word to describe brave heroes, especially in Star Wars Universe with the common term Jedi Knight.
The word Ren is a Confucius term that mean "Good Feeling." Now of course it will mean who knows what in the Star Wars Universe, but could this be a tiny hint by Abrams that the Knights of Ren were not intended to be an evil group?
The wording of the group 'The Knights of Ren' leads me to believe they were made as an attempt to be the next generation of Jedi, but the main intentions of their leader (Luke) changed and he fell victim to the Dark Side.
This would explain why Luke has yet to be seen in the trailer, because he could be in dark robes in all of his scene's or all of his scenes are after we realize he is the evil behind the Knights of Ren.
Luke's intentions were pure but he fell victim to the power of the Dark Side:
This is where my theory becomes very speculative, but bear with me. What if Luke pursued knowledge of both sides of the force in order to become a greater Force user? He attempted to master the power of the Light and Darkness.
In Return of the Jedi he is already shown to at least be dabbling in some Dark Side arts when he Force Chokes two of Jabba's Gamorreans:
Force Choke sometimes called Force Grip is almost never seen used by a Jedi and is more commonly used by Dark Force users, so the fact that Luke not only knows how to perform such a technique, but would actually use it leads us to assume that he is at the very least interested in learning about the Dark Side's power.
Could he have underestimated the power of the Dark Side, and In his attempt to gain more knowledge about the Dark Side he was overcome by it and his motivations became more about power than actually protecting people?
I think though if Luke did walk down this path, that he would be very conflicted, possibly even in denial of his Dark Side motivations. I think Luke would truly believe what he was doing was right, but his judgement would be clouded by the Dark Side.
Where does The First Order come in?:
It seems like the First Order and Knights of Ren will have the same relationship as the Empire and Sith did in the original trilogy, which means if my theory is correct then Luke could also be the man behind this new Empire.
I will admit to having no evidence to Luke's involvement in The First Order but we can tell from this scene...:
With Kylo Ren working with the Stormtroopers that the Knight of Ren and First Order are in fact working together. So Luke may be the main man behind both organizations and the Darth Sidious of this trilogy.
This image leads me to my next theory...
Kylo Ren is the son of Luke Skywalker:
As I said above, in the latest trailer we see Kylo Ren saying "I will finish what you started," talking about who we can assume is Darth Vader. I will make the same point that I made above, why would Kylo Ren be following in the footsteps of Darth Vader but NOT be a Sith?
Could it be that he is not speaking about Darth Vader, but rather Anakin Skywalker...?
As my theory states the Knight of Ren are not meant to be an evil group, they were originally made to help bring peace to the Galaxy. Could he be speaking of the original prophecy of Anakin Skywalker? Finishing what Vader/Anakin started when he killed the Sith Emperor.
Could the reason Kylo is so passionate about following in the footsteps of Vader also be because he is a relative?
Now if Kylo Ren is the grandson of Anakin Skywalker he could just as easily be the child of Han and Leia, but in my personal opinion I think that Kylo being Luke's son is better from a story telling stand point.
It allows us to see what would have happened if Luke had took his fathers offer to "rule the Galaxy as father and son" in the original trilogy.
Many people that I have discussed this theory with have tried to debunk it by saying that Jedi are not allowed to have children and Luke should know through experience that Jedi having kids is a mistake. Well people who think that are wrong, and here is why.
Luke was not trained as a Jedi from birth or even at a young age. He did not grow up under the same Jedi code as many other before him did, which means he never learned to control his desires for a romantic companion.
By the time he was trained to be a Jedi he already felt attraction towards other women which was obvious in a New Hope when we caught him on more then one occasion being mesmerized by Leia (We won't discuss the fact that she later turned out to be his sister).
Plus I highly doubt Luke would look at himself as a mistake.
Rey is Han and Leia's daughter and our new protagonist:
In the trailer we hear Rey asking Han if the "stories I'v heard are true?" to which Han respond's "It's true." This leads us to believe that Rey and Han DO in fact know each other, because how would Rey know to ask Han about such a subject matter? It also points to the fact that Han has been keeping secrets from her that he can no longer hide.
I believe that Rey is - as highly speculated - the daughter of Han and Leia, and they have kept their past a secret from Rey because they do not agree with Luke's decisions and do not want her following in the footsteps of her uncle, cousin, and grandfather.
This would be very reminiscent of the original trilogies secrecy surrounding Luke and Vader.
Right or wrong, I think that this story would be very entertaining for Star Wars fans, and be a very good follow up to the original trilogy.
This could set up one of three possibilities for this new trilogy:
- Luke is the new "Emperor" in the trilogy with Kylo Ren being the Darth Vader.
- Luke will die at the end and Kylo Ren will become the new leader of the Knights of Ren.
- Luke could see the error of his ways and battle back to the side of Light, but Kylo Ren remains on the Dark Side and becomes the main antagonist through the trilogy.
No matter what, I think that Rey will become our new protagonist for the series and hopefully continue the Skywalker legacy, even if her last name is Solo.
What do you guys think? Do you like or dislike my theory, and if so why? I hope at the very least it was an interesting read and I appreciate you taking the time to look over it.
Bonus Theory: Finn is the son of Lando Calrissian.
Many fans have wondered what significance - if any - Finn's ancestry has in the movie. Well I have a theory that piggy backs the original theory of this article.
Could Lando being buddies with Luke after Return of the Jedi have been made a head officer or general of the First Order thru Luke's wishes and his son being a soldier for The First Order?
Now I doubt the son of a high ranking official like Lando would be is nothing more than a regular stormtrooper, but it is never said how high ranking Finn is. He could easily be a high ranking officer, below Captain Phasma.
In the trailer he says "I have nothing left to fight for." Could this be because his father was killed because of The First Order? Which is why Billy Dee Williams may not have been cast in the movie.
I also think it is too much of a coincidence that Finn will some how make his way to finding Han, Leia, and Rey. Could he be searching out friends that his father had told him about, in order to help defeat the First Order?
This theory is purely speculative but it was something I thought of and I decided to share it and get some feed back on it.
Thank you for reading.
