When The Walking Dead first aired back in 2010, Daryl Dixon started off the series as a tough redneck-type, though very quickly his kind heart shone through. Daryl, who unlike most characters in the show is not in the comic series, has continued to develop, and many fans of the series have fallen completely in love with the gruff, Southern man -- even threatening to riot if he is ever killed off the show.

As fans will know, in the show, Daryl is very rarely seen with out a number of accessories, such as his crossbow, his leather vest with angel wings on the back, a motorbike, and even his long hair. However, while there's no doubt you noticed all of those things, there's one other accessory that Daryl is rarely without that you may have never noticed: His red bandana.

That's right, since the very first moment we met Daryl in Season 1, he's had a red bandana hanging from his back pocket. In fact, that little scrap of material has lasted longer than many of the characters in the show! Take a look at the crazy journey that Daryl's red bandana has been on through the course of The Walking Dead:

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct

Thanks to Redditor SpaghettiSnake, I learned that the red bandana's origins come from a time before Daryl and Merle had even joined up with the Atlanta survivors in Season 1! Daryl was given his red bandana by a woman named Anna Turner (a.k.a. Scout), a character that he meets in the game The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct.

Daryl's bandana is seen dangling from his back pocket when we meet him for the first time after he shoots a walker chowing down on a deer back in Season 1.

Season 2, Episode 5: Chupacabra

While out searching for Sophia, Daryl's bandana is dangling from his trousers, and Sophia's lost doll is tied up in the cloth for safe keeping.

While protecting the prison against the influx of walkers (who cause the deaths of T-Dog and Lori among others), the red bandana can be seen dangling from his pocket.

Daryl ties the trunk of the car shut with a red bandana, protecting him and Beth from a horde of walkers.

After Daryl teaches Beth how to use his crossbow, Beth hurts her foot in an animal trap. The red bandana can be seen as he gives Beth a piggyback through the cemetery.

While out in the woods, Daryl and Aaron meet up and come across Buttons, a horse that Aaron has been trying to catch for months. As Aaron and Daryl head towards Buttons you can see the red cloth hanging from Daryl's pocket.

The most recent time Daryl's bandana has been spotted was during a black and white flashback scene in the premiere episode of Season 1. Despite the scene not being in color there's no denying it's definitely the same bandana.

With the group currently wrestling with an enormous herd of walkers which are about to hit Alexandria, it will be interesting to see if Daryl, and his security blanket make it through to see another day, and if they do (which is almost certain), who the bandana outlives this time.

Did you notice Daryl's red bandana?
