When you spend so much time watching movies and researching celebrities, their beautiful faces start to become part of the furniture. So much so, that the oddities and quirks that make them individual start to blur into the background.

However, once you hear the startling stories lurking behind each of these celebrity scars, they won't be fading out of your memory any time soon...

1. Tina Fey

Tine Fey's lovely face has been plastered over our TV screens since the '90s, via roles on Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock and Mean Girls, but the origin of the scar that runs under her mouth to her cheek remained a mystery until fairly recently.

In an interview with Vanity Fair in 2008, Fey revealed that she was attacked during a school break when she was just 5 years old.

"During the spring semester of kindergarten, I was slashed in the face by a stranger in the alley behind my house"

Terrifying!

2. Johnny Knoxville

Johnny Knoxville is renowned for doing a lot of stupid shit on Jackass, but this one really takes the cake. Or, more aptly, breaks the cake.

During a 2010 interview with Vanity Fair (these guys really know how to get into the nitty gritty, it seems!), he offered a cringeworthy explanation for his most brutal injury – an explanation which will have you crossing your legs for the rest of the day.

“It’s just like a dog’s chew-toy down there. I broke my penis about three years ago trying to backflip a motorcycle. So that didn’t help its appearance, although it’s pretty cute. I still have to use a catheter twice a day and it’s been three years now. No, I can piss without it. I just have to keep the scar tissue from constricting down there. It looks like a sock that’s lost its elasticity. You know the kind that droop around your ankles? That’s what my penis looks like."

NOPE!

3. Bear Grylls

Similarly to Knoxville, the British adventurer Bear Grylls spends his days perusing his way around rather grisly situations. The dude has done some mad stunts in his time like, oh I dunno, killing a snake with his teeth or willingly climbing inside a dead camel. But when it comes to acquiring one of his more brutal scars? Well, let's just say Man vs. Wild may be better suited to the title Man vs. Food... and lost.

“I’ve got so many scars it’s ridiculous. I always depend on the Evel Knievel quote that says bones heal and chicks love scars. I’ve got a spectacular new one across my chest. I’m tempted to say that I got it from wrestling a crocodile, but the truth, sadly, is that I was pulling a pizza out of the oven while naked and burned myself.”

4. Sean Bean

Thankfully in real life, Sean Bean is tougher than the death-prone characters he notoriously portrays. Just as well really, as the poor guy has been the victim of quite a few scrapes.

Firstly, when he was filming the Patriot Games, his character had to battle Harrison Ford in a speedboat. Unfortunately for Bean, Ford was a little over zealous and struck him around the eye with a fish hook, opening a wound that needed quite a few stitches to close!

Then, a few years later, he was having a drink in London with Playboy model April Summers. Some douche made derogatory comments towards her and when Bean stepped in, he got stabbed in the arm with a bit of broken glass. Bean, being the total machine he is, didn't even bother with a trip to ER... he just ordered another drink.

5. Steve Buscemi

Back in 2001, Steve Buscemi stood up for friend and fellow actor Vince Vaughn in a bar fight which could have ended his life.

While they were shooting Domestic Disturbance in North Carolina, Buscemi was hanging out with Vaughn and screenwriter Scott Rosenberg in a bar one night. Not exactly known for their rowdy behavior, these guys clearly weren't looking for trouble but had no option to retaliate when approached by two seriously pissed locals. The reason they were annoyed? One of their girlfriends was flirting with Vaughn.

In a brawl which police had to use pepper spray to break apart, Steve Buscemi was attacked and stabbed above the eye, in the jaw, the throat, and the arm, injuries which could have easily ended his life.

The 21-year-old attacker was arrested and charged for assault with a deadly weapon.

6. Tommy Flanagan

Not the most famous name on the list, but his scars might be the most severe. No doubt you've seen Flanagan in flicks such as Braveheart, Gladiator and the TV show Sons of Anarchy, but his scars are more akin to the Batman's Joker.

While working as a DJ in Glasgow, Scotland, Flanagan was jumped and given a "Glasgow Smile" - the term given to taking a blade and slicing the sides of a mouth. The victim is then beaten until screaming, which in turn rips the cuts apart to form a savage smile effect.

Nice, huh?

7. Michael K. Williams

Michael K. Williams has become a household name thanks to his roles as Omar in The Wire and Chalky White in Broadwalk Empire, but things haven't always been going so well for Brooklyn-born man. His trademark scar certainly gives him an edge perfect for playing ruthless characters, but the story of how he acquired it is enough to make you nauseous.

“There was a popping party going on in Queens. I went outside to get some air, and I saw that two of my other friends were being surrounded by some dudes I didn’t know.
"The dude wiped his hand across his mouth and … smacked me. What he did was he spit a razor. He was positioning the razor in his mouth to get it between his middle finger and ring finger. And then he swiped me down my face.
“We managed to escape with our lives, barely, that night."
