The spin-off prequel to 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman is due to land April 2016 titled (imaginatively enough) The Huntsman. Directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan (who also directed its predecessor), the dark fantasy action-adventure tells the story of titular character Eric the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) and the actions that led him down the path to become Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron)'s henchman.

It's got a pretty impressive cast, in addition to Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron reprising their roles The Huntsman will also feature Emily Blunt, Jessica Chastain, Colin Morgan, Sam Claflin, Nick Frost, Sheridan Smith, Rob Brydon and Alexandra Roach.

One of the more heavily publicised aspects of The Huntsman casting is the number of heavyweight actresses appearing; Theron, Blunt and Chastain have all become well known for their action packed, no nonsense roles and having all three of them come together into one dark fantasy tale should prove to be pretty exciting.

We already know what Theron's role will be, but what about the newcomers?

Jessica Chastain As Warrior Sara

Jessica Chastain spoke to Screen Rant recently about her role, describing her character Sara as a Scottish warrior woman who "kick[s] a lot of butt"

Chastain: "I can’t really tell you much about it, but… it’s unlike anything I’ve ever done, I got to work a lot with Chris Hemsworth and Nick Frost and Rob Brydon and Sheridan Smith and Alexis Broach [and] Emily [Blunt] and I got to work a little bit with Charlize, which – that was fantastic. Because I love her Ravenna."

She's been pictured with long red hair so certainly looks the part, and if her previous penchant for portraying strong, well-developed female characters holds true Sara should be well worth seeing when she dons her ass-kicking boots on screen in The Huntsman next year. Hopefully she'll be channelling a bit of Merida too with that hair.

Emily Blunt As The Villianous Freya

Presumably Chastain will be fighting alongside Hemsworth as Eric, but Emily Blunt's character is seemingly taking a slightly different direction as she plays a the villainous Freya, a white haired woman who appears to be working alongside Theron's Queen Ravenna.

Blunt: "It's my first real villain role and it's surprising how easy it was for evil to come to me."

There's been speculation that Blunt will be portraying the Snow Queen, sister to Queen Ravenna, but this was back when The Huntsman was assumed to be a sequel so we're not 100% sure about that anymore.

The Huntsman's predecessor was a box office success but received pretty mixed reviews, Charlize Theron's performance was praised but the pacing and script were heavily criticised. Let's hope that the next iteration can learn from the mistakes of the past and come out with a strong performance.

The Huntsman, written by Frank Darabont, David Koepp, Craig Mazin and Evan Spiliotopoulos and directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan is scheduled for an April 22nd 2016 release.
