After a confirmed appearance in [Captain America: Civil War](tag:994409), Doctor Strange will be Marvel's first new hero to get their own movie in Phase 3. Set for a November 2016 release date, we don't know many details yet about the Doctor Strange movie, but casting is slowly being revealed. With Benedict Cumberbatch as the eponymous protagonist, and Tilda Swinton ready to wow fans with her gender defying Ancient One, Doctor Strange already has a stellar cast.

Rachel McAdams will also appear in the film, but what character she will play is still shrouded in mystery. Most fans are assuming she'll portray Strange's long term love interest, the supremely powerful sorceress Clea, but new rumours are starting to cast doubt on this possibility...

Rachel McAdams To Play... Night Nurse?!

This rumour comes to us courtesy of the Latino-Review, who claim their sources assure them that McAdams will play Christine Palmer, and not Clea as originally assumed. Palmer is also known as Night Nurse, but she's not the only Night Nurse in Marvel comics. Linda Carter, the woman who founded the superhero backalley hospice, was the first Night Nurse, and she has worked with Stephen Strange in the comics before...

Clearly the two have a great rapport, and it would be fun to see the cerebral and aristocratic Strange contrasted against a down to Earth vigilante nurse. Why the rumour states that McAdams will play Palmer instead of Linda Carter remains to be seen, and it doesn't make a lot of sense, considering Carter is the Night Nurse with which Strange had a romantic entanglement with.

But putting aside which of the Nurses McAdams might play, the idea that she will play Night Nurse and Not Clea this isn't as unlikely as you might expect. The only piece of information we've had about McAdams' role is this quote from Kevin Feige...

"She's the audience's eyes to a certain extent. She plays a very, very big part in the movie and represents a certain point of view of the worlds that we experience in that movie."

As Clea originates from a different dimension, and has incredible powers herself, it's difficult to see how she'll be "the audience's eyes".

Feige's comment certainly implies McAdams' character will be Earthbound, with an outside perspective on the weirdness of Strange's world. But wait, doesn't Marvel already have a Night Nurse?

Tying Together The MCU

Rosario Dawson's role as Claire Temple in Daredevil has been slated by many as a set up for the Night Nurse hospice plot, and this seems even more likely as Temple will feature in both the upcoming Jessica Jones and the later Luke Cage show.

The Night Nurse hospice would fit far better in the world of Netflix's Defenders, as a haven for the heroes to congregate in, as well as a neat way to tie all the Defenders solo shows together. And considering Temple will appear in all of the shows, it already looks like this is what Netflix are planning.

Of course, Marvel might be aiming to tie their TV and movie canon closer together, using Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer (or Linda Carter) to bridge the gap. In fact, Kevin Feige is already planning multiple future crossovers between the MCU films and TV shows...

"I think that’s inevitable at some point, as we’re plotting the movies going forward and they’re doing the shows. Certainly as they do more shows —particularly in Daredevil—that may occur."

With this in mind, Rachel McAdams playing one of the Night Nurses isn't so unlikely... until you consider Feige's later statement.

"But the reality of it is by the time we start doing a movie, they’d be midway through a season then by the time the movie comes out they’d be done with the second and starting the third season, so finding timing on that is not always easy."

Using the Night Nurse hospice to tie the movies and shows together might be a good method, as the hospice itself isn't tied to any particular plotline.

And of course there's the fact that Steven DeKnight couldn't use the term Night Nurse when describing Claire Temple, as Feige had plans to use a Night Nurse later in the films...

"The movie side had plans for her down the road so that was the only time we ran into a conflict. So we just used another name."

All this amounts to a lot of rumour and hearsay, but it certainly seems possible that a Night Nurse character will pop up in one of the Marvel films, and maybe even Doctor Strange.

Personally, I've got my fingers crossed for Clea, as she is seriously badass and it's always good to have more superheroes with reality altering powers. Her plot is also very compelling, and would make for an interesting story in the Doctor Strange film. But as the Doctor Strange movie is already populated with immensely powerful characters, maybe a more grounded and streetwise human is a better foil for Stephen Strange. Until McAdams' casting is revealed, only time will tell!
