Room is a 2015 Canadian-Irish drama film directed by Lenny Abrahamson and written by Emma Donoghue, based on her novel of the same name. Donoghue conceived the story after learning about the notorious Fritzl case in April of 2008. A 42-year-old woman, Elisabeth Fritzl told police in the town of Amstetten, Austria she had been held captive for 24 years in a concealed corridor part of the basement area of the large family house by her father, Josef Fritzl and that Fritzl had physically assaulted, sexually abused, and raped her numerous times during her imprisonment. The abuse by her father resulted in the birth of seven children. Donoghue built the foundation for her novel from this harrowing story and we hear it recounted through Jack's perspective. We begin in Room with Jack played by Jacob Trembly and Joy Newsom or "Ma" played by Brie Larson. Jack has always been in "Room" as they call it and knows no other life. Ma has gone to great lengths to make life as normal as possible for Jack. She keeps him on a schedule and educates him and makes sure he does daily exercises. At night Jack goes to sleep in a wardrobe when Old Nick played by Sean Bridgers comes down. During one of the visits he tells Ma that he has been unemployed for the last 6 months and with that news she starts to fear the house will be foreclosed and Old Nick will be forced to kill them. She comes up with a plan that will involve Jack and to do that she must explain to him the reality of their situation. She explains to Jack that she was a little girl 7 years ago when Old Nick tricked her and said he needed help with his sick dog and he kidnapped her. Jack is being asked to understand a lot for a five year old and has a very hard time comprehending what she is telling him but like most children his curiosity takes over and he starts to believe her and asks questions. Joy can't know if her plan will work and Jack will be tasked with saving them both which is quite a big responsibility for a small child but it's their only hope. She works out the plan with Jack over and over until he has it memorized and then she finally sets it into motion. Will he be able to save them both? I won't post any spoilers for those who haven't seen it but this is a heart-wrenching story of overcoming horrific conditions and being a survivor. Room won the People's Choice Award at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival and won the award for Most Popular Canadian Feature, based on audience balloting at the 2015 Vancouver International Film Festival. Make sure you bring you tissues with you because this will leave you in tears. Room is now playing in Theaters.
