In 2015, or this year, if you will, DC confirmed that they would be making a Green Lantern Corps movie set for release in 2020. As a huge fan of multiple characters in the Green Lantern canon, I became ecstatic when first I heard the news. I am simply thrilled! Especially after the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern film from a few years back. While I certainly didn't dislike it as much as some, it did little to satiate my appetite for a big screen adaptation of the boys in green.
Without further adieu, I'd like to relay my thoughts on which lanterns ought to be in the movie and the actors I'd like to see play them!
(This list will be dealing exclusively with Green Lanterns from earth)
First and Foremost, Hal Jordan
I'd say Hal kind of has to be in this movie. He is always an entertaining character and is full of complex, emotional backgrounds that make him the man we all know and love. He's a fascinating character with a lot to offer. I hope DC chooses Hal as one of their stars because he is a classic member of the Justice League and will always be my favorite Green Lantern!
1. Bradley Cooper
Bradley Cooper is an extraordinarily talented actor who is no stranger to roles that require both humor in one scene and earnestness in the next. With movies like American Hustle, American Sniper, Silver Linings Playbook, and many, many more, I don't imagine he would have any trouble pulling off Hal Jordan.
2. Jake Gyllenhaal
Over the past few years I've become quite a fan of Mr. Gyllenhaal. He's got a certain craze in his performance that I rather enjoy. But I think he'd make an excellent Hal Jordan because of his flexibility as a performer. His films over the past few years have been quite diverse: Southpaw, Prisoners, Enemy, etc. He would make for, I believe, a very inspired casting choice.
3. Nathan Fillion
Last, but not least, Nathan Fillion, the lovable star of ABC's Castle, would be a really great choice for the role. While it is likely that he would provide a more lighthearted appeal for the character than the above actors, I still think he'd be great. He has the natural charm that Hal must exude and he's a really great actor. Also, the fanbase he has acquired through projects like Slither, Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog, and, probably most of all, Firefly and Serenity is quite extensive. He even voices Hal Jordan in some of DC's animated films!
John Stewart is the embodiment of awesome. He's just a cool character. He's tough as nails and really cares about what he does. He would be an excellent foil to Hal Jordan's penchant for appearing aloof. They would be the best of friends and the worst of friends. This character opens up many doors for character development and exciting stories.
1. Derek Luke
Derek Luke is a fantastically talented actor that is sinfully under-appreciated and under-used. His work in Friday Night Lights is unmatched and it shows that he has the chops to act in high emotion situations without over emoting. He'd make a great John Stewart! His other works include Self/less, Captain America: The First Avenger, and Miracle at St. Anna, among others.
2. Chiwetel Ejiofor
Chiwetel Ejiofor is one of the best actors around, in my opinion. He never fails to do exactly what is required of him for a role. He offers the audience no more or no less than what his character needs to offer. He'd make for a more sincere, ardent John Stewart because of his highly emotive eyes. The world knows he can act from his experience in films like Salt, Z for Zachariah, and 12 Years a Slave.
3. Tyrese Gibson
I've gotta give it to Tyrese, I think he'd make a great John Stewart. Granted it would be a different John Stewart, but it could still work. He could still very easily be the foil needed for Hal Jordan, but I imagine he'd be a bit less serious and a bit more humorous. And what's wrong with that?!
Kyle Rayner is something of an enigma. But, he's an enigma I'd like to see on the big screen! Kyle Rayner is a great character with a lot of mystery about him and he'd make a great addition to the Corps. Perhaps he is a new member in ranks of the Green Lantern Corps? Either way, the most exciting part about the addition of Kyle Rayner means that DC almost assuredly would have to throw in other lantern corps as well, maybe even culminating in a Blackest Night/Brightest Day storyline?
1. Kevin Zegers
Kevin Zegers is a really excellent actor. He's been around for quite some time and, while he isn't necessarily a household name, he's had a solid career. I think he'd make a great Kyle Rayner because of his demeanor. He's kind of quiet but also has an air of intrigue about him. With credits like Air Bud, Mortal Instruments: City of Bone, and Dawn of the Dead, I think he'll have no trouble as Kyle Rayner.
2. Daniel Radcliffe
I feel like this is possible. Daniel Radcliffe is a really great actor with a wealth of experience in film franchises. Everybody that has seen any of the Harry Potter series know that Daniel Radcliffe is terribly talented. I think Kyle Rayner would make a logical jump for him. Kyle is a young guy with an enormity of power he has yet to unleash. He has countless villains out to get him as well. Sound like anyone familiar?
3. Taron Egerton
Taron Egerton proved himself in Matthew Vaughn's wild ride that is [Kingsman: The Secret Service](tag:713143). He has a very cool manner and would make a really great Kyle Rayner. Kyle Rayner could even be made into a problem for the Green Lantern Corps. He could have an attitude that Hal or whomever is training him would have to smack out of him! So many options!
Well there ya have it. This is my list. I believe that these three Green Lanterns should be introduced in the Green Lantern Corps movie. I realize I left out Guy Gardener and Simon Baz, and I think there is definitely a place for them down the road, but their presence isn't necessary just yet. In my humble opinion, that is. I'll come back with another list of Green Lanterns from a different planet and even some villains! Let me know in the comments how you feel about my list!
Green Lantern Corps is set to be released in 2020. It currently has no cast, no director, and no writer. Here's hoping casting starts soon!
