With the release of Star Wars Episode IIV: The Force Awakens, we should all take the time to catch up on the parodies of the Star Wars franchise. In no particular order are 10 of the best (in my opinion) Star Wars parodies throughout popular culture.
10. "Weird Al" Yankovic's : The Saga Begins
Released in 1999, the Star Wars song from his Running With Scissors Album, about the beginning saga for Episode I, Weird Al makes a parody song based on the Don McLean song American Pie. One of the best songs from Weird Al in my opinion. Here it is:
9. Thumb Wars
Released also in 1999, this short movie (about a 1/2 hour long) is a parody of Episode IV: A New Hope. The most incredible part of this Star Wars parody movie directed by Steve Oedekerk (also known for Kung Pow), is the entire film uses thumbs.
8. Family Guy Star Wars Trilogy
Released in 2007, the 'Blue Harvest' episode was an hour long episode for the Family Guy TV Show. The sequels, Something, Something, Something Dark Side (2010) and It's a Trap! (2011), Both parodied The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi respectively. These parody episodes are quite possibly the best parodies of Star Wars ever.
7. "Weird Al" Yankovic's Yoda Song
Released in 1985, this song was catchy as hell, and you'll have it stuck in your head for ever. You would thaw out of Carbonate before getting this song out of your head. From Weird Al's Dare to be Stupid album, Weird Al takes on Yoda and sings a melody about the old Jedi.
6. Robot Chicken: Star Wars
Released in 2007 by the Adult Swim channel, the toy-centric television show gave new life to the parody genre and entertained us all. Robot Chicken went on to release Episode II and III in 2008 add 2010 respectively.
5. Back To The Future (1985)
Yes, Back To The Future parodied Star Wars when McFly dressed up as a space man named Darth Vader from the Planet Vulcan. Marty dressed as the alien to scare his to-be father to date Lorraine or he would melt his brain. One of the best scenes from Back To The Future, and it still is as funny now as it was in 1985.
The 1996 episode of Friends titled 'The One With The Princess Leia Fantasy', has Rachel dress up as Slave Leia for Ross. The moment is ruined however once Ross hums the John Williams theme.
3. Spaceballs (1987)
Come on... Spaceballs, enough said. Mel Brooks is a genius.
2. Chad Vader: Day Shift Manager
Taking place in a grocery store in a Galaxy not too far away, and debuting in 2006 by Blame Society Productions, the series takes place in a grocery store where Chad Vader is the day manager. It also has a pretty sweet theme song.
1. Hardware Wars (1978)
Deemed by George Lucas himself as the best parody of Star Wars, released in 1978 by Pyramid Films with a budget of $8,000 this film takes on Star Wars with a clever take. The 13 minute short film was a classic parody, directed by Ernie Fosselius. It is widely uploaded on Youtube and is not hard to find.
