Let me start by saying Spoilers for both The Walking Dead comic series, and the TV series. This is also my first article, so here's hoping it's decent.
So, recently a fan favorite character by the name of Glenn was supposedly killed off from the popular show The Walking Dead. I say supposedly, because there are many fans speculating the ambiguity of whether or not Glenn actually died on the show. It easily could have been a trick to fool the audience into having to suffer Glenn's death a second time later in the series. Here's why I think that Glenn should stay dead, regardless of whether the fans were satisfied or not with how he "died."
When Robert Kirkman created the Walking Dead his idea was that none of the characters were safe, no one was guaranteed to survive the whole story. Glenn was a character many hoped would be too good to be killed, but alas he was brutally killed by Negan and his barbed wire baseball bat. What made this death so intense was how gruesome it was, and how unexpected it was. Moments before Negan landed on Glenn at random, he specifically said he didn't want to kill Glenn. This false sense of security made the death all the more gut wrenching. That's where the story is at it's best, when it catches you off guard, when it comes out of left field and shakes up the whole series.
Other examples of this are Rick losing his hand, and Carl getting shot through the face. Both events were quick and unexpected, and both events are highly anticipated to hopefully be part of the show in the future. Therein lies part of the problem. Due to the show building up to events already shown in the comics, it becomes something people are expecting and anticipating. Lately the showrunners have been hinting at cutting Rick's hand off in the future. I feel that this removes the element of surprise. Same with Glenn's death. If they keep telegraphing these events as a "will they/won't they." event, it runs the risk of becoming to obvious of things to come.
The way Glenn "died" in the show may not have pleased everyone, and may have caused many to doubt it's authenticity, but I think that's why it should stay as is. If he survived then we still have to expect his real death eventually. At that point we may over antivipate it and may lower our standards even more. Glenn's death being something we don't except is the best way to give it that unpredictability. It allows us to feel it isn't fair. It allows us to miss him because he didn't get the death he deserved.
Robert Kirkman wanted characters to die before it was their time. Not everyone gets to go out with honor, not everyone gets to finish their story. I think that Glenn dying the way he did in the show gives the fans back that feeling of unexpectedness we need to truly feel the full weight of these horrible events. If they bring Glenn back then we just get numb to his death.
As much as we may hate it, it may be best for Glenn to stay gone. But, he will always stay in the heartof every fan of The Walking Dead.
Season 6 continues Sundays on AMC.
