The internet is a harsh beast. Behind the safety blanket of anonymity, people say all sorts of hurtful things. Empire star Gabourey Sidibe is the most recent victim of online trolling, after cruel memes appeared, mocking her Empire sex scene.
Her character, Becky, has an on-screen romp with MC J Poppa on a rooftop, but for some reason completely lost on me, the scene seemed to annoy people because Gabourey isn't what some would seem conventionally attractive.
However, as they say, no-one can make you feel inferior without your consent, and the Precious star completely owned all trolls with her epic response in a recent blog post. She said:
Also, yes. I, a plus sized, dark-skinned woman, had a love scene on primetime television. I had the most fun ever filming that scene even though I was nervous. But I felt sexy and beautiful and I felt like I was doing a good job.
You go, Gabourey! She's certainly doing a great job of shattering the status quo and conventional ideas of beauty.
"I'm not sure how anyone could hate on love"
The 32-year-old wasn't done there...
I keep hearing that people are “hating” on it. I’m not sure how anyone could hate on love but that’s okay. You may have your memes. Honestly, I’m at work too busy to check Twitter anyway.
Boo-yah! Take that haters!
Now it must be said, the issue here is with the trolls who feel it's okay to pass judgement on someone because they are plus size, or not what you see on magazines or in ads. Although it's a shame Gabourey felt the need to respond, her comeback lays the smackdown.
I personally think she's doing a great job at being a perfect on screen role model, and I'd like to think that eventually people will end the unnecessary hating, because no one's perfect.
Until then though, I'll let Gabourey's tweet response to previous comments on her appearance end the argument well and truly:
Game. Set. Match.
