There is no denying that becoming an actor as a full time profession is an incredibly tough gig, and it's probably because of this that a surprising amount of celebs have spent some time on the streets after sacrificing financial security to achieve their dreams.
Below are some of the stars who know all to well the struggle that is sometimes required to break into the industry, but now we are all thankfully that they were willing to suffer for their art.
1. Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer Lopez was homeless and sleeping in her dance studio when she was 18 years old because her mother threw her out because she disapproved of her daughter's decision to pursue a dance career instead of going to college.
2. Chris Pratt
In the late '90s, Chris Pratt was homeless and living out his van while 1990s working at a Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. in Hawaii.
3. Sylvester Stallone
Before Sylvester Stallone sold the script for Rocky, he was homeless and was so desperate for cash that he sold his dog for $50.
4. Halle Berry
Before becoming a household name, a young Halle Berry was lived in a homeless shelter after moving to New York. Speaking about her past with Reader’s Digest in 2007, Berry said:
"A girl had to do what a girl had to do. You can do that when you’re 21 and ambitious, and your eyes are this big and you don’t want to go home.”
5. Jim Carrey
Carrey experience homelessness when he was just 12 years old and his father lost his job. The whole Carrey clan were forced to live in a van for a while in a move that Carrey later described as "a traumatic kick in the guts."
6. Shania Twain
Shania Twain's memoir This Moment On tells how she lived in a homeless shelter when she was young as her mother fled from an abusive relationship with Shania and her brothers and sisters. Shania wrote that:
"Mom got out of the car to use a pay phone while we sat and waited in the car, returning a few minutes later with a piece of paper on which she’d scribbled the address of a homeless shelter. That night, we slept in a crowded, sweltering place on cot-like beds spread out along the walls of a series of spacious, open rooms designed for large groups."
7. Kelsey Grammer
He might be best known for his role as the affluent Fraser, but before winning five Emmy Awards, Kelsey Grammer was once sleeping rough in the alley behind a theatre in an outdoor camping tent that was tucked behind his motorcycle to hide him from public view.
8. Hilary Swank
As a teen, Swank moved to Los Angeles with her mother to pursue a career in acting, and they lived out of an old car for a couple of months while also crashing at a friends’ totally barren house until they found their feet. Swank told CBS News that:
“We had a friend who was selling their house and so they said, ‘You know, there’s no furniture, but you can stay there at night. And then, during the day, you have to leave so we can try and sell it. So we got air mattresses. Blew the air mattresses up. Slept on the air mattresses. And left in the morning.”
9. Natasha Lyonne
After starring in movies such as But I'm a Cheerleader and American Pie, Lyonne became homeless due to her struggles with addiction. Lyonne fell behind with her rent payments eventually evicted from a friend's townhouse, and ended up living on the streets.
10. Daniel Craig
Before he found fame as James Bond, Daniel Craig had was forced to resort to sleeping on a park bench after moving to London as a struggling actor.
11. Carmen Electra
Carmen Electra was homeless for a few years after her boyfriend drained her bank accounts. After she finished touring with Prince, Electra had nowhere to go and lived on the streets of L.A.
12. Sam Worthington
Once a bricklayer, Sam Worthington enjoyed a thriving film career before he had an existential crisis at the age of 30 and decided he had to figure out what really mattered to him in life. He sold everything he owned and ended up living in his car before he was invited to audition for Avatar shortly thereafter. In his own words, "I had nothing to lose."
