Billy Crudup's relationship with Claire Danes in 2003 was a huge controversy. For those that can't remember pop culture that far back, 2003 was the year R. Kelly's 'Ignition Remix' was in the charts and Britney and Madonna kissed at the VMAs. I mean, a lot more probably happened, but these are the two things that stuck with me. Mainly the kissing.
Anyway, I digress. Their relationship was a huge controversy for good reason. It does always make the news when one celeb moves on to another quickly, and people are quick to judge. However, Billy Crudup went one better - he pursued his relationship with Claire Danes when Mary-Louise Parker was seven months pregnant with their child.
That was 12 years ago now, and Mary-Louise has finally spoken out in her new memoir, Dear Mr. You... Albeit indirectly. Understandably, she was left emotionally shaken following the ordeal - hardly surprising considering she was dumped two months before their child, now 11, was born.
"I am pregnant and alone"
Deciding to focus on an isolated incident as a metaphor for her emotional state, rather than call out Crudup directly, the Weeds star talks about an incident she had when a taxi driver got lost, and she lost all emotional control. After swearing and screaming at the driver, she was kicked out of the cab.
In an excerpt published by Jezabel, she writes:
My voice was shot and I barely got out
Look at me
You turned at looked, I think for the first time...
My life is worse than yours in this moment.
I am alone. Look, see? I am pregnant and alone. It hurts to even breathe.
Your hand slowly went to your mouth
I’m trying to get through it but I’m by myself every night and every morning and no one, nothing helps. I’m sorry I yelled. I can’t get my shoes on anymore. Please, I know I am awful, it’s been made clear but look at me please
Look at me
Later on she apologized to the driver, claiming that now that she has reflected on the incident, she realizes the incident was "one piece of a bigger picture."
"I didn't know what those consequences would be"
In October, Claire Danes spoke out about the incident in a radio interview with Howard Stern. The relationship started after the pair met on set filming Stage Beauty, and ended after four years in 2007. Danes is now married to another man, Hugh Dancy.
Reflecting on the relationship, and the controversy surrounding it, the Homeland star said:
"I was just in love with him. And needed to explore that and I was 24... I didn’t quite know what those consequences would be."
It's fair to say, it's all in the past now. But it's refreshing to see a memoir which doesn't just attack Crudup to sell copies. Mary-Louise's meditation on the incident is elegant, mature and admirable. Almost the complete opposite of Crudup's behavior at the time... Oh, yes, I went there!
