As we draw closer to the end of the year, speculation about the plot for [Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice](tag:711870) is fierce. With tons of Easter eggs scattered through the trailer, and the cast and crew dropping hints, it's easy to see why fans are busy coming up with theories!

The highly anticipated Batman vs Superman is set to be one of 2016's biggest blockbusters, and with all this speculation flying around it's sometimes difficult to break down what we know for sure, and what we don't. So here's some crucial clues that may provide some essential plot details... but did you spot them all?

There are several hints in the trailer that mean very little on their own, but thanks to information we've gathered since, they start to mean a whole lot more...

Batman's Kryptonite Enhanced Suit

This is pretty much essential for any fight with the immensely powerful Superman (though it does feel a bit like cheating). Fans have theorised that Bruce Wayne would don a Kryptonite laced suit for the final battle, and recently this was confirmed by EW after they visited the set...

"Batman outfits himself with a reinforced mech-suit equipped with strength-augmenting armor and, yes, kryptonite."

So far so good, but how, and why, would Wayne get his hands on this mineral? It's not exactly common knowledge that Kryptonite is Superman's ... uh... Kryptonite, and the rock itself is fairly rare. But the trailer did actually give us a glimpse at one particular character who's got his hands on Superman's personal poison...

Lex holds the key to Superman's defeat.

Put these two facts together and you've got an intriguing plot point: at some point in the film, Lex Luthor must strike up a bargain with Bruce Wayne so that Batman can get the materials for his Kryptonite suit. This begs plenty of questions as to the nature of Luthor and Wayne's relationship, and also raises the possibility that Batman just stole the Kryptonite, but for now we'll leave the speculation there.

Zod's Corpse: Is Lex Experimenting?

That shot of Zod's body in the trailer caused a stir among fans, and rightly so. Michael Shannon has confirmed his appearance in the film, but thanks to the actor's confusing statements recently it's difficult to believe anything else he says about the role. Many fans have assumed that considering Lex's possession of the Kryptonite, he must be experimenting on Zod to find Superman's weakness.

This does line up with Shannon's assertion that he wasn't actually on set for the film, but just provided voice over work...

"I wasn't there. It's a really awkward situation: I'm in the trailer for a movie that I didn't work on. I went over and did some voice-over stuff. I don't know if I'm supposed to say that. I get very nervous."

You've got to feel for the guy: the people involved in any superhero movie are sworn to so much secrecy it must be very difficult for them to answer questions in interviews. But I digress.

If what Shannon says is true, this puts to rest any idea of a cloned Zod being the secret villain of Batman vs Superman, but the idea that Lex is experimenting on his corpse does seem plausible, especially when we consider that this is the only way Lex could have learned about Kryptonite being Superman's weakness.

Post Apocalyptic Future?

Ok, this hint is a little more obscure so bear with me. It all comes back to that darned desert sequence again: featuring Superman's soldiers and a murderous Batman, the desert scenes in the trailer are the source of much debate among fans.

Is it a dream? Is it a trick? No, it's a vision of a post-apocalyptic future, according to one theory. There's been murmurs of a prophecy to warn Batman and Superman what should happen if they continue on their antagonistic path. Some fans have speculated that this future will be revealed by Ezra Miller's Flash in some kind of strange time travel plot.

Honestly, I'm not too convinced about this (it seems to complicated to feature in a film primarily about the fight between the two heroes), but there's also this little hint that Miller reportedly dropped recently...

The apparent "post-apocalyptic" suit might prove the time travel theory... or it might just be a cool design. Of all the possibilities, this one definitely seems the least likely but hey! We know Zack Snyder wants to surprise us, and this would be one hell of a twist!
