Twitter is addictive, and when you're a celebrity with 6 million followers firing questions and compliments your way and hanging off your every word, it's not difficult to imagine getting a bit of an ego boost.

But there's another side to social media, a side less pretty. Pop culture is built on building celebrities up and tearing them down, so when the comments stop being complimentary and start getting vicious, it can be a pretty humbling experience - one that not every celeb copes very well with.

But in the end, just like the mafia, it always pulls you back in. With that in mind, let's take a look at six celebrities who left Twitter in dramatic fashion... only to return years, months, or in some cases mere days later.

1. Alec Baldwin

Serial Twitter quitter Alec Baldwin left the platform not once but twice, first in 2011 - when he was dramatically ejected from a flight at JFK Airport for refusing to shut down his iPad whilst playing the Words With Friends app - and again two years later, when a journalist accused his wife, Hilaria, of taking a call during Sopranos star James Gandolfini's funeral service. I'm not sure what's more impressive - the serial quittage or the fact that Baldwin's wife is named Hilaria.

Needless to say, he came back. Twice.

We can all relate to that.

2. Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato may be a Confident chanteuse, but even she occasionally gets burned on Twitter, as happened when she quit in 2010, around the time of her bipolar diagnosis, eating disorder and rehab troubles. Happily for us she bounced back, and her Twitter account is now a towering example of how celebrities can poke fun at themselves and look cool doing so.

That's in reference to the red carpet exchange from a few months back in which Demi infamously answered "I'd have to say the mug" to the question "What's your favourite dish?". Apparently nobody gets her subtle sense of humour. Don't worry, Demi, we also appreciate a good mug.

3. John Mayer

Some celebs leave Twitter in the wake of abuse or controversy, but for musician John Mayer it was more of an internal dilemma. He revealed that he quit in 2010 because it was taking over his life, he was a "Tweetaholic" and he could no longer focus on songwriting. In his defense, it's hard to pen a classic in 140 characters.

Mayer announced his return in casual style over three years later, putting him among the Twitter quitters with the strongest willpower. He now tweets once every few days, which seems way more healthy.

4. Zelda Williams

Robin Williams' daughter Zelda was forced to quit Twitter in 2014 after a few cruel trolls started directing hate her way in the wake of her father's death. She had previously been disparaged as a "dyke", and the fresh abuse at such a painful time proved to be the final straw.

Happily, it wasn't forever and Zelda returned, her Twitter page now a haven of light and positivity.

5. Jaden Smith

Actor, singer, Instagram artiste, son of Will, brother of Willow and frequent philosopher Jaden Smith is probably most famous for using Twitter to impart profound nuggets of wisdom from the deep corners of the brain the average man is unable to access, such as this thought-provoking revelation...

And this mysterious musing on the future...

Please don't go, Jaden. Where would we be without your guidance?

On July 4th this year, Jaden disappeared from Twitter, also deleting his Facebook and setting his Instagram to private, which begs the question: If a Jaden Smith disappears from social media, was it ever really there to begin with?

Apparently it was. Jaden was back within a month. No reason was ever given, presumably because true genius should never be questioned.
