Every year there are multiple films with great ensemble casts that elevate their given film to even greater heights. We have seen it recently in movies like The Martian and the next great ensemble looks to have been assembled for the upcoming crime thriller, Triple 9.
The film stars Kate Winslet (Titanic), Chiwetel Ejiofor (The Martian), Casey Affleck (Gone Baby Gone), Woody Harrelson (The Hunger Games), Anthony Mackie (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), Gal Gadot (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), and Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead). It's like the Avengers of awesome character actors coming together to make their best rendition Heat and Deep Cover. It is close to impossible to not get behind a cast and film as hard-hitting as the trailer for Triple 9 promises.
When you bring together a cast as talented as the one that Triple 9 boasts, it's equally important to have a director who has a strong and proven eye. John Hillcoat is at the helm and yet another reason to get enthused about the upcoming film. Whether in The Proposition or The Road, Hillcoat has proven to be a master at creating tension out of dire circumstances. His feature films rarely take place in the present, so it will also be interesting see how he handles a modern setting.
It goes without saying that veterans such as Winslet, Harrelson, and Ejiofor, will bring their A-game. However, there are also another crop of up and coming actors who are trying to prove that they belong on the big screen, such as television stars Aaron Paul and Norman Reedus. While Gal Gadot is tasked with familiarizing audiences with her screen presence, before she takes on the iconic role of Wonder Woman, in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and in the Wonder Woman spin-off film. Wanna get blown away? Check out the trailer.
When a crew of dirty cops is blackmailed by the Russian mob to execute a virtually impossible heist, they realize the only way to pull it off is to manufacture a 999, police code for “officer down”. The chaos that ensues when a police officer is shot in the line of duty is just the diversion they’ll need to do the job, but whether they have the will to kill one of their own is an entirely different matter. Their plan is turned upside down when the unsuspecting rookie they set up to die foils the attack, triggering a breakneck, action packed finale tangled with double-crosses, greed and revenge.
Triple 9 opens on February 19th, 2016.
