Welcome to another week of Fantastic Geeks, a show created by the fans, for the fans! In today's segment, we take a closer look at the upcoming slate of video game adaptations that we're all going to see in the near future. Check the video below to get the full scoop, but, if videos aren't your thing, then you can also read all the same information below!
I love Video Games. You love video games. We all love video games. So...why haven’t we had an amazing games-to-film adaptation as yet? Sure, we’ve had some fairly decent attempts, but there’s still stuff like the Super Mario Brothers movie that lies in the closet of the industry. Thankfully though, it looks like that’s all about to change, and soon!
Just next year alone we’re going to get adaptations of Warcraft, Assassin’s Creed and Ratchet & Clank, and I couldn’t be more excited. Normally, I would shudder at the mention of my favorite games being turned into a feature film, but something tell me this is going to be the moment where games start getting done right in Hollywood!
Assassin’s Creed probably has the most potential for being the best video game adaptation ever! While a lot of details are sparse for now, we do know that Michael Fassbender will be the main protagonist in the film. That said, one of the best things about the franchise is its ability to introduce a different hero and time period for almost every game. Jacob Craig also saw this potential and even put together an incredible list of 10 actors that need to be part of the AC universe. And before you start thinking that this is going to be a quick money grab, keep in mind the the highly talented team behind Macbeth is also creating this movie.
Speaking of talent, Duncan Jones is easily one of my favorite directors. I adored Moon, loved Source Code and because of these, I have complete faith that Warcraft will be an absolutely amazing film! Sure, the CGI in the trailer is a little off right now, but the movie is still several months way. Even the first trailers for Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World didn’t represent the movie’s final effects. And if you’re still doubting me on this, then check out J.Ryan’s Warcraft trailer breakdown that highlights 5 reasons to get hyped!
Call of Duty
If you aren’t convinced yet, Activision over the weekend, also announced plans for a Call of Duty movie. And look, no one is expecting an oscar from Call of Duty, they’re fun, intense games that have all the ingredients to make a thrilling Summer blockbuster! Aayush Gupta even went as far as to plan out exactly how a Call of Duty cinematic universe could exist. Because after all, isn’t being part of a cinematic universe the in thing these days?
So...yeah, all in all it’s fair to say that this could very well be the age of good video game movies, guys! Just as how it took some time before Hollywood figured out how to do comic books right, I want to say the age of good video game adaptations is finally upon us.
Afterall…Nothing is true, everything is permitted.
Before we end off this segment, we'd like to give a quick shout-out to Ian Simpson for breaking that 2 million readership milestone!
