Suicide Squad is a film that will be as dark as they come. With such twisted characters as The Joker and Harley Quinn, many speculated that the film will receive a R rating due to is graphic nature.
Well, that theory has been put to rest by producer Charles Roven who claims the film will be rated PG-13.
All DC films to be PG-13?
Not only will the very dark Suicide Squad likely receive a PG-13 rating, but DC will try and keep every film as consistent as possible with that rating. Producer Charles Roven elaborated here:
“The intention of the film is definitely to be PG-13… We really want to make these films tonally consistent so that, as I said because this is a shared universe, at least our current thinking—and again, we’re not dealing in absolutes because while this is business it’s also a creative endeavor, so you want to leave yourself open to changing your mind, doing something different, being inspired, that’s the whole process of filmmaking is you have to allow for inspiration as well as having a road map for what you’re gonna do. So our plan right now is to make all these films PG-13. In some cases, you know, right there on the edge of PG-13, but still PG-13.”
While a PG-13 rating doesn't define a film by any stretch of the imagination, it does limit the amount of violence that DC can portray in Suicide Squad. While most people expected Batman vs Superman to be PG-13, Suicide Squad is definitely one I had my money on being R.
With DC playing catch up to Marvel in terms of being the leader in Comic Cinematic Universes, it makes sense that DC will expand their age demographic by not limiting themselves with an R rating. With an R rating, parents will be hesitant to let their kids into the theaters, which in turn will hurt their numbers.
Deadpool is really the first superhero movie that will venture into the R rating and we still aren't sure how financially successful it will be. With a character such as Deadpool however, it makes sense not to limit your content with a PG-13 rating, but I think Suicide Squad can get away with it. As Roven said, they will be pushing the limits of PG-13 so everything should be fine!
