Since they announced that Zoom would be the main antagonist for this season of The Flash, the internet has gone wild with speculation. I have read several articles, even reading all the comments on these theories people have, and the reasoning behind them. There seem to be a few people that the general population have latched onto, believing they are the one under the demon’s mask. In this article, we’ll go over all the theories I’ve seen on the interwebs, and we’ll list them from least likely to who I think is most likely to be under the mask. But first, let’s start off with a bit of history on the character, shall we?

Who is Zoom?

Zoom, or Hunter Zolomon, was a villain for then Flash, Wally West. I know that when I read through these theories, I read his backstory a ton of times, so I’ll spare you the details. For those of you who have not read the comics, here’s a basic run-through of his history:

Hunter’s parents were both distant from him. One day he came home from school to see his home being seized by the police. Turns out his father was a serial killer, and his mother was his last victim after she told the police. He then became fascinated with the criminal mind and began working with the FBI. He worked with his wife and father-in-law, but one day he would make a mistake costing his father-in-law his life. So he moved to Keystone City where he started working in the Metahuman department. He worked closely with Wally West, the Flash. One day out on the field, Gorilla Grodd broke out of Iron Heights and left Zolomon a paraplegic. He asked the Flash to go back in time to reverse the attack, but Wally refused, knowing not to mess with the time line. Hunter then decided to mess with the cosmic treadmill to try to go back in time, but things go south as the treadmill explodes. This is how Zoom gets his abilities. He is convinced that since Wally never suffered personal tragedy like his predecessor, Barry Allen, he must go through trauma to make him a better hero. Zoom rationalized everything by saying it was to make the hero better by overcoming obstacles.

“My name is Hunter Zolomon. Despite what the public believes, I am the fastest man alive. I am Zoom. But I am not a Rogue. Far from it. I have taken the name and colors from Eobard Thawne -- the time traveler known as Professor Zoom -- in order to terrorize my friend, Wally West, The Flash. I suffered through tragedy. I lost my family to it. I understand the depths it will drag one down to. And only by surviving it does one become stronger. I will recreate myself to help my friend and in turn -- the world. I will do anything to make the Flash a better hero.”

Now where Zoom differs from every other speedster is his powers. He does not actually have super-speed, meaning he does not tap into the speed force. Zoom is actually able to manipulate time relative to himself. Meaning he can slow time around him. Using this power, he has surpassed the speed of even Wally, the fastest flash. But enough about the comic zoom, let's get into the TV show.

Zoom on the CW series is a different beast. First off, just the appearance (which I love by the way) is far different from the comics. This Zoom is wearing all black, and has blue lightning around him. These two things factor into some of the following theories. Also, his motives are far more evil on the TV show, and also very simple: he wants every speedster dead. Now let’s get into the possibilities shall we!

Patty Spivot, Iris West, Caitlin Snow

I put the three of these together because they can be disproved by sheer logic. And, believe it or not, I have seen these names pop up more than once when talking about these theories.

Why They Could Be Zoom

They can’t… they just... no.

Why They Can’t Be Zoom

Two things. Number one: “Never forget, I am the fastest man alive.” Number two: look at Zoom, you got a clear look at him this week. If you still buy this theory… I don’t know what else I can do for you.

Wally West

Now in the comics, Wally takes up the mantle of the Flash after Barry sacrifices himself to save all the universes (spoiler alert), but in the show, confirmed by the producers, he is going to be Iris’s brother. Not nephew. Does he have his speed yet? Doubtful, but we’ll see.

Why He Could Be Zoom

Wally is a known speedster in the DC Universe, that’s really all I got on this theory.

Why He Can’t Be Zoom

The CW hero series like to do this thing where each big bad of the season has had a very personal effect on the hero’s life. Ex: Merlyn, Slade, Ra’s (eh, kinda), and Wells. So because we’ve yet to even meet the character, I think this would disqualify him.

Jay Garrick

A newcomer to the show, and not a popular theory, but I’m addressing them all here. Jay is the Golden Age Flash, or the first to bear the name, just in case ya didn’t know.

Why He Could Be Zoom

He’s a speedster that just happens to be gone when Zoom is around? And the only time we see the two together is from Jay’s point of view. Interesting…

Why He Can’t Be Zoom

My main argument is he’s obviously terrified of the speed demon and has helped Barry become better. Some people theorize that Jay came to Earth 1, found his doppelgänger, and convinced him to start infiltrating Team Flash. Mmmmm, that’s a bit of a stretch, and logically I don’t see it happening.

Black Flash

If you’re familiar with the comics then you’ll know that the Black Flash is basically the grim reaper of the DC speedsters.

Why He Could Be Zoom

You can’t argue the costume, or the demonic look/voice. Pretty grim reaper-ish.

Why He Can’t Be Zoom

The Black Flash only appears as a speedster is dying and is not human. The Zoom we see here is not carrying them to the other world, he’s the cause of it. Also, Wells definitely said he’s human. So nope, unless they completely disregard the comic origins of the Black Flash, I don’t see this happening.

Harrison Wells/Eobard Thawne

Wells, the Earth 2 version, is a dick that looks to be trying to protect his daughter. Does he have an agenda? I’d say so. As for Eobard, we’ve yet to see if he exists on Earth-2.

Why They Could Be Zoom

Harrison Wells was the Reverse Flash in the first season, killing his victims by vibrating his hand through their chest. In ep. 2 this season, we saw Zoom doing things before Jay got sucked into the singularity. Coincidence? Also, you gotta admit Wells doesn’t seem like a good guy.

Why They Can’t Be Zoom

Way too obvious. I mean do you think that they would follow up an amazing first season with this reveal? C’mon guys, give the writers some credit.

Joe West

Barry’s adoptive father, and actually quite a popular theory for the big bad this season.

Why He Could Be Zoom

Given the way the CW shows like to make their twist heartbreaking for the hero, this automatically puts Earth 2 Joe as a contender.

Why He Can’t be Zoom

“Tony Todd is voicing Zoom. You can’t have a black guy do the voice and reveal someone white under the mask.” Ummm, yes you can. This is the main argument supporters of this theory have found. Ever seen Star Wars? “But people were mad.” So what? Look at the legendary status those movies have now. Just because some people will be offended doesn’t mean they’re gonna go to this option. The fact is, unless Joe has lost weight just to put on that outfit, it’s not probable. Also, if Jay and Harry know who Zoom is, they would’ve had a much bigger reaction to seeing Joe.

Ahh, here we are. So far down the list, the above mentioned characters, in my mind, have little to no chance of being the man under the demonic mask. Now let’s get into some real contenders.

Edward Clariss

The original “Reverse Flash” was this doctor. A villain of Jay Garrick known as The Rival, he believed that he replicated the formula that gave Jay his speed, and called it “Velocity 9.”

Why He Could Be Zoom

The rival gives off the same blue lightning that is seen on Zoom on the show. Not only that, but he is the arch rival of Jay back on Earth 2. I don’t know, but I was never taught to believe in coincidences.

Why He Can’t Be Zoom

There are two things that have me troubled about this theory. First off, the velocity 9 formula is only temporary. Once it wore off, Jay was able to defeat Clariss. Zoom and Jay have been fighting for two years, that’s a long-lasting formula. Also, the whole introducing a new character would be very uncharacteristic. It's the same reason I didn’t include Hunter Zolomon himself on this list.

Eddie Thawne

Yes, we all saw Eddie shoot himself and get sucked into the singularity. I personally hate this theory, but since it is so popular, I thought I’d put it up this high.

Why He Could Be Zoom

The popular theory is that he got sucked into Earth 2 and grew a hatred for speedsters after going through. I’ve also read that since a singularity doesn’t follow any sort of logical rules, maybe he was sent back in time to when the particle accelerator went off on Earth 2. Or maybe he could be Cobalt Blue, Barry’s evil twin?

Why He Can’t Be Zoom

Again, this is only so far down the list because of its popularity. Using my logic, I can safely say Eddie won’t be Zoom, but I’ll humor you. Let's say Eddie did survive the wormhole. Zoom and Jay were fighting when the singularity popped up, so nope, he can’t be Zoom. “He could’ve been sent through time!” You’re telling me the singularity was up above Central City for two years? Or did it conveniently just open at the specific point in time to let Eddie out, and then close up? Only to reopen two years later? Okay. And if that wasn’t enough, he’s a regular on another show. He doesn’t have time to appear in almost every episode. “But Diggle is on another show, other than Arrow.” Yes, but he’s not a regular on the other show! Okay, end rant on Eddie.

Barry Allen

This was actually my first pick originally, and it made sense to me. Obviously having a separate Earth opens up tons of possibilities.

Why He Could Be Zoom

The initial reason I thought it was Earth 2 Barry was because of the New 52 comics. Barry actually comes back from the future, in a new dark blue costume, emitting blue lightning. Then when I actually started watching the series and the doppelgängers, I noticed a few things: The doppelgängers coming from Earth 2 seem to go after their counterparts here on Earth 1. What would make Zoom go after Barry? Is it only his speed? Or is it his doppelgänger? And besides the claws and mask, Zoom’s costume is almost identical to Barry’s.

Why He Can’t Be Zoom

The only thing I can think of is the body shape. Zoom is considerably bigger than Barry.

Henry Allen

And here is my number one pick for who Zoom is. Don’t believe me? Let’s go over the theory:

Why He Could Be Zoom

Earth 2, things don’t happen quite the same. Remember this week’s episode? Did you catch that Oliver was the one who died on that ship and his dad was the Hood? Kinda Flashpoint-ish isn’t it. Well, in that context, what if Barry was sent to jail for his mother’s murder, thus explaining the scenes of him in jail we saw in the speedforce? And if Barry’s mother was killed by a speedster, and Henry found out about this, he would grow to hate them. Especially once he gained his speed through the particle accelerator. And with the way CW likes to make their villains, this would be the perfect fit. And, on top of that, he has the perfect build, and still images of Zoom’s eyes match the actor's.

Why He Can’t Be Zoom

The writers read this and want to mess with me.

Well, that’s it guys! Tell me who you think is Zoom in the comments, and if you agree/disagree with what I wrote, let me know why!
