There's been a mixture of excitement and secrecy surrounding Oscar winner Lupita Nyongo's role in Star Wars. We've known it'll be motion-captured. But what we didn't know is she's been there, the whole time, right in the center of the movie poster!
J.J. Abrams has confirmed her character will be Maz Kanata. Although much hasn't been given away about the role Maz will play in the movie, we've been told her eyes will have "special meaning and power."
Entertainment Weekly Tweeted an image of Lupita doing her thing. And no, it's not the most elaborate game of dot to dot you've ever seen – that's how they capture the actor's expressions and meaning using the motion-capture technology, silly...
A magical character
Abrams confirmed some of her backstory:
“Her history is that she was a pirate for a long time. She’s lived over a thousand years. She’s had this watering hole for about a century, and it’s like another bar that you’d find in a corner of the Star Wars universe.”
It all sounds very mysterious, but extremely exciting!
Talking of the role, Lupita, who won the Academy Award for her captivating appearance in 12 Years a Slave, said:
“As an actor for films, your eyes are a lot of the way you communicate anyway. So it was definitely a gift to have that be the means to her magic as a motion-capture character.”
The official poster below managed to sneak in Maz, right before our very eyes. Those of you who spent your childhood playing Where's Waldo will have an advantage, but see how quickly you can spot her:
Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be released on December 17th. But you already knew that, didn't you?!
