So there I was on November 10, 2015, heading out to pick up my preordered copy of Fallout 4. I walked into the store and saw my friend working there. He looked up from his work and asked me in a sarcastic tone, "Oh hey! Let me guess... you're here to pick up Rise of the Tomb Raider, right?" Now, all jokes aside, I completely forgot that Rise of the Tomb Raider was released on the same day as Fallout 4. And from the looks of it, it looks like the whole world forgot too. So it looks like the Rise of the Tomb Raider's Xbox timed exclusive release was an epic fail!
The intended release plan for Rise of the Tomb Raider was to release the game as a timed exclusive for Xbox One, and to release the game for PC and PS4 at later dates. Now this marketing strategy, which I look into in my previous article, was aimed towards generating larger profits upon release. This not only backfired by causing mass confusion in the gaming community, but it also lead to Rise of the Tomb Raider competing with the release of the long awaited Fallout 4. Not a smart battle to fight!
So far there has been no news of how many units Rise of the Tomb Raider sold, so we can't tell how successful the release was. But with the number of records Fallout 4 is breaking, I can assure you that it dwarfs in comparison. However, with the release of the PC and PS4 version only a year off, sales of Rise of the Tomb Raider will surely pick up. But until then, it looks like Microsoft are now paying for fighting a battle they couldn't win.
Despite this little set back, I think Rise of the Tomb Raider is a fantastic new addition to the Tomb Raider series. I really can't wait to get my hands on the PC or PS4 editions when they're released in early 2016 (for PC) and holiday 2016 (for PS4). Until then, it's back to Fallout 4 I go!
