Modern Family actress, Ariel Winter proved over the weekend that she wasn't about to be bullied by cruel Internet trolls, and she doesn't think anyone else should be either.
After the 17-year-old posted a photo to Instagram of herself in a bikini posing alongside her two nieces, Winter was inundated with lewd comments calling her a "slut" and "whore," and even people telling the teen that she was "asking for it."
Not one to stand by and allow the keyboard warriors to take over, the young star replied with a second Instagram photo, and a caption which dished out some serious truths:
The caption reads:
Who knew that an innocent photo with my nieces would turn into this? The height of a girl's skirt or whatever she is wearing for that matter, does not imply what she is asking for. It sickens me to think at 17 years old, a photo of myself with my nieces is suggesting that I'm "asking for it". I typically never give power to the mean things people bravely say behind their computer screens on the Internet, but this is for the girls who are constantly bullied whether it be online or at school.. You are not asking for anything because of what you are wearing- you are expressing yourself and don't you ever think you deserve the negativity as the consequence to what you are wearing- YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL. Celebrate you and don't let anyone's comments allow you to think less of yourself. Us girls have to stick together!!!!!!
Winter's many fans also came rushing to her defensive, and have since flooded the original comment with positive comments, many praising how she handled the trolls.
Despite her young age, this unfortunately isn't the first time Ariel Winter has spoken out against commenters trying to body shame young women. Last week, Winter teamed up with singer Ariana Grande to shut down misogynistic comments made by a Twitter user, and earlier this year she revealed she had had breast reduction surgery after the physical and emotional pain became too much. Talking about her life before the surgery, she revealed to People:
"It made me feel really uncomfortable, because as women in the industry, we are totally oversexualized and treated like objects. Every article that has to do with me on a red carpet had to do with 'Ariel Winter's Crazy Cleavage!' or 'Ariel Winter Shows Huge Boobs at an Event!' That's all people would recognize me by – not, 'Oh, she does great work on Modern Family.'
We live in a day and age where everything you do is ridiculed. The Internet bullies are awful. I could post a photo where I feel good, and 500 people will comment about how fat I am and that I am disgusting,"
It's truly unfortunate that such a talented actress has had to deal with these horrible remarks, especially at such a young age, from those who choose to hide behind a computer screen. However, if there is one good thing to come out of all the negativity, it would be Winter's wise-beyond-her-years reply, which truly shows what a great role model she is to young women.
