The Sam Mendes-directed film shattered records in China in its debut there this weekend, becoming the biggest opening weekend of all time for a 2D US film, the biggest opening three days of all time for any 2D US film, and the biggest Friday opening of all time for any 2D US film

The Peanuts Movie stayed in second place with $24.2 million; it's grossed $82.5 million domestically since its bow last weekend.

The North American box office did not offer a warm welcome to new releases this weekend, with Angelina Jolie Pitt's By the Sea flopping in its very limited debut with just $95,440. Faring better were Love the Coopers, which placed third with an estimated $8.4 million, and The 33 in fifth with $5.8 million.
