Universal's Snow White & The Huntsman was a commercial hit back in 2012 grossing $396 Million worldwide but due to a negative critical reception, behind the scenes scandal and high production budget, the studio decided to opt out of a sequel starring Kristen Stewart as Snow White in favor of a spin-off lead by Chris Hemsworth titled The Huntsman: Winter's War.

The spin-off will star Chris Hemsworth (In The Heart Of The Sea) returning as the Huntsman Eric and Charlize Theron (Prometheus) reprising her role as Ravenna and will focus on the history between the two characters before the events of Snow White & The Huntsman. Emily Blunt (Sicario) has joined the cast as the villainous Freya, the Ice Queen. And Oscar Nominee Jessica Chastain (The Martian) will armor up as Warrior Sara.

Here is the film's official synopsis:

Long before the evil Queen Ravenna (Theron) was thought vanquished by Snow White’s blade, she watched silently as her sister, Freya (Blunt), suffered a heartbreaking betrayal and fled their kingdom. With Freya’s ability to freeze any enemy, the young ice queen has spent decades in a remote wintry palace raising a legion of deadly huntsmen—including Eric (Hemsworth) and warrior Sara (Chastain)—only to find that her prized two defied her one demand: Forever harden your hearts to love.

When Freya learns of her sister’s demise, she summons her remaining soldiers to bring the Magic Mirror home to the only sorceress left who can harness its power. But once she discovers Ravenna can be resurrected from its golden depths, the wicked sisters threaten this enchanted land with twice the darkest force it’s ever seen. Now, their amassing army shall prove undefeatable…unless the banished huntsmen who broke their queen’s cardinal rule can fight their way back to one another.

Universal also released four character posters of Hemsworth, Theron, Blunt and Chastain:

The Huntsman: Winter's War is directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan who worked on the previous film as Visual Effects Supervisor and is making his directorial debut with the spin-off. The posters aesthetically look very similar to Snow White & The Huntsman and I imagine a lot of the film will also due to the choice of director.

The Huntsman will serve as a reboot of sorts to this universe seeing due to the first film not going as well as it should have. The Huntsman: Winter's War trailer is scheduled to hit the web this Thursday and the film hits theaters April 22nd 2016.
