In today's modern world of the restless paparazzi and internet users, it can be pretty hard for a celebrity to maintain any semblance of privacy in their personal lives. For Famke Janssen, those struggles are no different than any other celebrity, but she has managed to keep herself mostly under the wire. A feat that should not go without great merit. And because I've had to dig so far to find so much (or so little depending on how much someone else knows), here's a countdown of the top ten things you probably didn't know about the eternally beautiful, Famke Janssen.
10. Not a Fan of Social Media
Although there are many fan pages dedicated to the perennial beauty, she has confirmed herself several times that she has no Facebook or Twitter accounts. She also admits to owning an iPhone but sticking with her ancient BlackBerry. She's also stated in the past that she doesn't even own a TV.
9. She Was Once Married
Yes, it's true. From 1995 to 2000, she was the wife of writer, director, and producer, Kip Williams, whom she met on the set of The Adventures of Sebastian Cole. Four years after their marriage ended, Kip Williams married actress Gretchen Mol, Famke's co-star in both Rounders and The Ten.
8. Briefly Dated Ryan Gosling and Ben Affleck
Before she settled down with her current distinguished looking male companion, she had brief trysts with both of these Hollywood heartthrobs. The relationships, though super hot in nature, ended abruptly with Famke stating in Affleck's case, "I just got bored with Ben." No word on exactly why the relationship with Gosling ended. One can only imagine...
7. She Works for Disney
Specifically for the Disneyland Parks. Famke provides the Dutch-language narration for all Disneyland Park tours. So, if you're from the Netherlands or just happen to be a fan, ask for the Dutch tour. I mean, I guess that would be kind of cool.
6. Broke a Rib Twice Filming Her Own Stunts
During the steamy scene in Goldeneye where Pierce Brosnan and Famke are battling it out in the sauna, Pierce accidentally slammed Famke's body so hard against a wall, she broke a rib. Later on, she admitted fault for the accident because it was her idea for him to get so rough with her in the scene.
Years later during the filming of Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, in a fight scene between Janssen's Muriel and Gemma Arterton's Gretel, Famke was rigged to a crane to achieve the appearance that she was levitating over a balcony. Unfortunately, the crane jerked back a bit when lowering her down and ended up breaking one of her ribs.
5. Famke is an Ambassador for the United Nations
In 2008, Famke Janssen was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for Integrity by the United Nations for their Office on Drugs and Crime at a conference held in Nusa Dua, Bali.
4. She's a Graduate of Columbia University
After departing from the Netherlands in the early eighties where she entered the University of Amsterdam with a focus on Economics ( a decision she later called the stupidest thing she's ever done) she came to America and after a memorable career as runway model, she became a student at Columbia University to study creative writing and literature. She graduated in 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
3. Filmed a Pilot Episode for a Spin-off of 'The L Word'
In 2008, she filmed a pilot episode for the spin-off that was known at the time as 'The Farm'. It was due to be set in a women's prison and follow the life of Leisha Hailey's character, Alice. It also co-starred Melissa Leo and Laurie Metcalf. Due to the cliffhanger left by the original series during its finale, Showtime was eager to give the show a greenlight. However, in 2009, the network decided to pass on the series.
Having seen Orange is The New Black, I bet there have been some internal discussions over at Showtime as to whether that was a good move or not.
2. Turned Down 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine'
Her one episode as Kamala on Star Trek: The Next Generation garnered such a positive fan response that she was offered to reprise the role on Deep Space Nine, only this time, it would be a leading role on the main cast. She turned it down expressing her desire to focus mainly on her film career. The role of Jadzia Dax was created in her place.
1. (RUMOR) Replaced Anna Friel as Jean Grey in X-Men
There was a rumor going around back in early 1999 that Anna Friel had auditioned and secured the role of Jean Grey for 20th Century Fox's adaptation of the popular Marvel comic book series. The rumor states that Janssen was a late audition for the role and shortly after her showcase, she was told that she would taking on the role. The rumor found new life in 2008 when Anna Friel replaced Famke Janssen as Erzebet Bathory for the feature film about the Countess Bathory also known as the Blood Countess.
