Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, and Bloodborne. Though the latter may not be an official part of the Souls series by name, these 4 games represent one of the most fascinating and engaging franchises in modern gaming. FromSoftware have delivered one of the most captivating RPG universes in years, and the gameplay that supports it is a challenging marvel.
Anyone who's played these games has countless moments of tension to recall. Which boss challenged you the most? Where was the bonfire that brought you the greatest sense of relief? These are the experiences that Souls fans adore, and Dark Souls 3 has a serious reputation to live up to before its release date! But which 3 moments would you pick from the series to measure its accomplishments by?
Dark Souls 3 - Can it Top These 3 Gameplay Moments?
The Souls games create their atmosphere through gameplay. Unlike other RPGs, they don't rely on conversations or cinematics to bring their worlds to life. FromSoftware create massive interconnected areas; areas that are teeming with enemies to challenge you over and over again. These challenges are what bring places like Drangleic to life. Therefore, all of the best moments in this series I've experienced through its gameplay, and here are my personal favorites!
Dark Souls - You're Not Ready For This
The arrival of the Asylum Demon is, I think, one of the best moments in modern gaming. I had heard of Dark Souls' crippling difficulty prior to engaging with this monster, but I had no idea that was to be thrown in the ring with this boss after about ten minutes with the game. It was terrifying and exhilarating, and once you uncovered that you could escape the room, I knew that the game was preparing me for an experience I wasn't familiar with.
I wasn't ready for a game to challenge me like this, but Hidetaka Miyazaki and his team were using clever methods to teach me about the hostile lands I'd entered. I was to think outside of the box, and be prepared for anything. It's one of the best openings to one of my favorite games of all time.
Demon's Souls - Who Am I Fighting?
Miyazaki's favorite boss in the Souls series comes from Demon's Souls. The Old Monk doesn't really have a similar game mechanic out there that I'm aware of. Rather than being a boss like any other, online players can actually become Old Monk and fight against you in your own game. I recall being frustrated by my inability to figure out this character's moves. He was fast, had no attack patterns I could follow, and I was dying over and over.
Then, as I often do, I consulted the Souls community, only to discover that I probably wasn't fighting the same boss every time. I couldn't believe that other players were taking control of a boss like this. It's a completely unique idea, one that I've never seen replicated. It demonstrates how not only playing Souls games is rewarding, but interacting with the community around the games is too!
Dark Souls - This is Crippling
Dragon Slayer Ornstein & Executioner Smough. Cited as the most difficult boss fight in the series, this battle needs to be bested by Dark Souls 3. Bloodborne and Dark Souls 2 were easier in comparison to the other two, and we'd love to see Dark Souls 3 challenge us with a fight like this once more! The moment when you kill one of them and think you've got a handle on things is amazing, especially when you see the remaining enemy transform into a more powerful beast. Glorious game design.
What Do You Desire From its Release Date?
I have tremendous respect for this series, and I can't wait to see how FromSoftware improve on what's come before with Dark Souls 3. But what are your favorite moments from the series? Is there something you desire from the latest installment? Let us know in the comments below!
