Seriously, 2015 has been an exceptional year for Video Games! It seems that almost every release has been exceptional, just look at this list of titles: Bloodborne, The Witcher 3, [Batman: Arkham Knight](tag:2683936), [Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain](tag:2683985), Guitar Hero Live, Halo 5, [Assassin's Creed Syndicate](tag:3605993), Black Ops 3, Rocket League, PES 2016, and the indelible Fallout 4. With Rise of the Tomb Raider on top of all of these releases, it's clear that this is one of the best years we've had in a while. Time to get a PS4 or XBOX One, people!
2016 will have a lot of competition to compete with the masterpieces of this year, but taking a smaller look at Naughty Dog's highly anticipated Uncharted 4, do we think it has what it takes to stand up to Crystal Dynamics' beautiful Rise of the Tomb Raider on release date?
Uncharted 4 vs Rise of the Tomb Raider
Rise of the Tomb Raider is unfortunately a timed exclusive for the Xbox One and Xbox 360 at the moment. PC will join in during the first quarter of 2016, followed by the PS4 around this time next year. The reason that its exclusivity is unfortunate is purely due to the fact that it's a fantastic game - everyone should play it! Though I'm sure many have already put it off for several months seeing as it shared the same release date as Fallout 4 - that's unfortunate.
But in relation to Uncharted, Square Enix's Tomb Raider from 2013 has drawn numerous comparisons. Earlier this year we thought that the two sequels would be competing against one another, that is until Naughty Dog announced the game's delay. We're not entirely sure what Uncharted 4 is going to be like, but what we do know is that it'll have serious competition From Crystal Dynamic's excellent Rise of the Tomb Raider. But why?
Everything that was great about 2013's Tomb Raider has been improved upon. The gameplay of Rise of the Tomb Raider is engaging, satisfying, and insanely re-playable. There's a greater focus on actual raiding of tombs, and the set pieces are epic and beautiful to watch unfold.
Tomb Raider took a long time to become a success. Square Enix was initially disappointed by sales, but the game was a slow burner, eventually going on to make millions. Perhaps the same will happen with Rise of the Tomb Raider! We sincerely hope so, because this is a cinematic adventure worth embarking upon!
The narrative in both the Uncharted series and 2013's Tomb Raider are top notch. Rise of the Tomb Raider expands upon the reboot's prowess, and allows us to really connect with a far more mature Lara Croft. Some of the minor characters aren't as well developed in comparison to this powerful heroine, but the plot is exciting and engaging for the entire campaign.
Uncharted 4 has serious competition here. Crystal Dynamics took its basic formula and demonstrated that they could exceed our expectations and create a fantastic sequel. The game demands to be played, and we can't wait to see how Uncharted 4 performs next to it on release date!
