After the stellar success of the first two movies in The Maze Runner franchise in the international Box office, with Maze Runner grossing $350 million worldwide and The Scorch Trials grossing $310 million, we can expect that The Death Cure, will be no different. Fox is already planning ahead for the movie as they are very eager to get started on the next installment of their hit YA film franchise.
Wes Ball has signed on to direct the movie, and after leading the last 2 films of the series to victory, we can expect nothing less than the best from him.
“I am directing the third film and we’ve already been busy preparing and working on the final conclusion of this saga.” - Wes Ball
Wes has already started revealing what we can expect in the story line of the final movie. According to Wes The Death Cure will be even bigger than the first two movies, and very cool. Wes stated The Death Cure would stand out from the rest of the trilogy and he guarantees that it will do the whole franchise justice.
"It's gonna be a different kind of an engine, a different kind of genre almost and a different sort of color palette and terrain." - Wes Ball
The Death Cure is said to take place one year after the events of The Scorch Trials ends. Since Wes incorporated elements of Death Cure into Scorch Trials, it should adapt the time jump into the story line. It follows the story of the remaining Gladers, (after having lost quite a few along the way) as they team up with the Right Arm to take down WICKED once and for all. All while searching for a cure for the deadly Flare virus.
"This next one will be cool because we're gonna cut maybe a year later. Yeah, so it'll be cool." - Wes Ball
Heads up to those of you who haven't read the book, there will be a major death in this movie, (Just like the name says) a death that will make you wish you had never even heard of The Maze Runner because yes, it will hurt that much. Us book fans know it as, 'Page 250'.
Wes has chosen to steer clear of the modern day young adult film franchise cliche of splitting the final movie into two. The final chapter of The Maze Runner saga will be one major movie.
“Ultimately our goal is to create an awesome three-movie trilogy. Not many people have done that and now I have the opportunity to do that.“ - Wes Ball

“ I’m lucky and thankful that they asked me to direct all three films. At first I wasn’t sure if I was going to do it or not, but honestly, it was the cast that I wanted to work with again. They are such great people.“ - Wes Ball
