We can all recall the emotional conclusion to Naughty Dog's The Last of Us. It had an affect on every gamer that experienced it, and the reactions to the events are as varied as the people who played them. But a recent video from the React Channel on YouTube has brought a group of teens to the end of The Last of Us. You can experience the whole game with them on this channel, but aside from its shocking opening, the final video has the most interesting reactions.
We get the opportunity to see people who don't normally play games emotionally connect with the events that unfold. Some are shocked, some are moved, and some are confused. But the video also shows us what some thought of Joel and Ellie after the credits rolled, and whether they think The Last of Us 2 should expand on the first game's events.
Do We Need Joel & Ellie in The Last of Us 2?
Personally, I'm content with The Last of Us in its current form. If The Last of Us 2 does happen, I'd love to see Naughty Dog explore this universe with other characters, rather than continue from where things left off. But let's take a look at some of the reactions and statements that these teens made following the beautiful ending to The Last of Us:
- "The ending was probably my favorite part. I liked how it wrapped it up; it made sense. It was a reasonable thing that [Joel] would do in that world."
- "It was cute, but it's really fu&%ed up, and that's what I liked about this game."
- "I probably would have done the same."
- "I think it was good, but it was kind of open ended [in a bad way]."
- "I can't even feel good, I don't feel like it was resolved! There's no conclusion."
A mixture of emotions and opinions for sure. Some sympathized with Joel's actions, whereas others questioned his morals. After all, he does chose to save one person rather than gift humanity a second chance with a cure. But that's the point of the game. It's supposed to challenge you in this way, forcing you to question yourself. What would you do if put in this position? Joel is a flawed human after all, and he reacted in a very human way. Who wants to be hurt?
But already we see these teens considering the second game. We can see them questioning the conclusion of The Last of Us, and wondering whether The Last of Us 2 is going to continue the tale of Ellie and Joel. After watching this video, did any of them have a similar reaction to yourself? Do you feel like The Last of Us 2 needs to wrap up the story of the first? Let us know in the comments!
