Thanks to animated movies and children's books, most of us are familiar with the fantastical fairytales and fables of characters like Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Snow White and Hansel and Gretel. But, while companies like Disney have tended to imagine these characters in bright, bold colors and with happy endings to their stories, what would happen if fairytales were made in horror films?

Photographer Miwa Yanagi has created a series titled 'Fairytale' which takes your favorite fairytales and basically turns them into the stuff of nightmares. Take a look at some of the photos below, and see if you can ever imagine your favorite fairytale in the same way again:

Did Sleeping Beauty really prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel by accident...

Hansel and Gretel

This bony finger looks like the stuff of twisted nightmares

Don't touch that apple, Snow White!

Cinderella

In the original Cinderella, the evil stepsisters cut parts of their feet off so they would fit in Cinderella's glass slipper and fool the prince into believing that they were his true love. Ouch.

The Little Match Girl is already quite a horrible tale, but this image just makes it even sadder.

I don't know about you, but for me the image of Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother cradling each other inside the belly of the wolf is mega creepy.

While in Disney's Tangled Mother Gothel was a horrible guardian, there's just something about this version that has me a little more scared.
