Dark Universe, commonly referred to as Justice League Dark, is finally coming into the light this week with some major news and a few solid rumors.
Let's start with the reliable word that DC and Warner Bros. are circling some leads to direct, and they seem to have what it takes to make a reliably morbid entry into the DC Cinematic Universe. Guillermo Del Toro was originally tapped to direct, but he opted just to pen the script instead.
Fede Alvarez and directing duo Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado are leading the pack
Fede Alvarez is best known for 2013's Evil Dead remake, which won a surprising amount of praise from a fandom that keeps the original in untouchably high esteem. There's no doubt he's familiar with gruesome story matter, and his inclusion could abate fears that Dark Universe just won't be dark enough.
The same could be said for Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado, whose suspenseful film Big Bad Wolves also throws in its fair share of black humor. Either choice would follow the recent trend of taking a chance on newcomer directors to helm big-budget features, which paid off big time for Colin Trevorrow's Jurassic World and James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy.
Casting rumors are also running rampant
According to Heroic Hollywood, Colin Ferrell is being eyed for Constantine, and Ewan McGregor's name is getting tossed around for Jason Blood/The Demon.
Filling out the cast might be Ron Pearlman as Swamp Thing, Monica Bellucci as Madame Xanadu, and Ben Mendelsohn as Anton Arcane. Deadman fans shouldn't worry about the lack of casting news for him, the studio is pursuing a comedic actor and presumably just haven't landed on a top choice yet.
Since Dark Universe is still in development, all of this is subject to change, but the overall outlook is looking pretty great!
