Warning: SPOILERS for Issue 12 of Marvel's Star Wars comic series!

The moment that the Star Wars fandom realized that Leia was the one being handed Anakin's lightsaber in a teaser for The Force Awakens, a spark of glee ignited. The daughter of Anakin Skywalker—a perfect mix of Padme Amidala's sharp wit and the Skywalker patriarch's irritability—has never canonically been seen using a lightsaber (she trained to be a Jedi in the Legends series, but I'm fairly certain that most of the commenters who know that won't see this), so the very idea of her carrying the family heirloom was enough to set the fandom on fire.

So far, there's no real evidence that Leia will bust out with a custom saber of her own in [Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens](tag:711158), but fans don't have to wait until the movie's release to see that anymore.

BOOM.
BOOM.

Yes, my friends, the time has come: Leia Organa has officially fought with a lightsaber, and with her, the bonus of a rather pessimistic Han Solo and an angry Chewbacca. No, seriously.

CHEWIE IS DUAL-WEILDING! AAHHHH!
CHEWIE IS DUAL-WEILDING! AAHHHH!

On the Smuggler's Moon of Nar Shadaa, our heroes have finally been reunited as Han, Leia, Chewie and their friends attempt to free Luke from the clutches of an upscale Hutt who is obsessed with collecting Jedi artifacts.

Breaking into the Hutt's collection and with no other weapons at their disposal, our heroes are forced to pick up the lightsabers within the collection after Artoo expertly provides them.

And so...

Marvel's Star Wars comics (and all spinoff Star Wars comic books under the Marvel umbrella) are officially canon, and while the story has progressed quite a lot (we're now on issue 12) it's never too late to catch up. January kicks off the massive Vader Down event, where the Rebels find themselves at an advantage and corner Vader -- but not for long, if he has anything to say about it.

Catch up with Marvel's Star Wars comics at your local comic shop, or get them digitally on comiXology!
